2012 Ford Explorer spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

It's never good to be caught by the paparazzi in the buff. Unless, of course, that was your plan all along in order to get your C-list self some much-needed coverage in the various gossip rags. But we digress. Our intrepid spy photographers managed to snap off a giant series of photos of the hotly anticipated 2012 Ford Explorer completely uncovered, and that is a very, very good thing indeed.

For the first time ever, thanks to an unruly gust of wind, we get to see the first-ever unibody Explorer in all its glory. That looks to include a new take on the familiar in-your-face three-bar grille with newly perforated top and bottom rungs bisected by two thin chrome strips up front. Note, too, the mildly sculpted flanks that lead to the currently en vogue fastback-like sharply raked C-pillar. A closer look at the fascia reveals not-yet-completed projector headlamps ensconced in clear covers that angle well back into the fenders. Lookin' good so far, we'd say.

Though we don't quite get a good look at the rear fascia, we do get a clear shot underneath the car from the hind quarters. This is most definitely a front-wheel drive chassis, and though this particular mule isn't equipped with one, there will surely be an optional rear differential for all-wheel drive duty. See all the shots for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

I'm puzzled as to where the new Explorer fits in the Ford lineup. It looks like the offspring of the Freestyle/Taurus X and the Edge. The F/TX went on to become the Flex, which is available with AWD and a third row of seats... so where does that leave the new Explorer?

The hood is designed identical to Land Rover's

Here's a couple of looks at the rear (in progress) from about January 2010

There is no Lincoln variant. Those are pictures of a camo'ed MKX mixed with pictures of an Explorer mule. Here's a camo'ed MKX in better light. Notice the similarities?

        @ That One Person

I haven't heard of one. I think on earlier mules they were grafting existing front ends just to not give away what it really was. Wouldn't be the first time. The one I saw had a Flex front that was an awful fit.

I don't know why a 3rd row/extended version (mine and the "Lincoln" both had a raised rear like so called stadium seating) would have different side creases.

The thing I noticed about the Lincoln "variant" is that the front end pic doesn't even match up with the other pics. I am talking about colors and camo. And quite a few people agreed.

I don't think there is going to be a Lincoln variant or it would have been announced.

I think I caught the apparent Lincoln variant (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/17/reader-spy-next-ford-explorer-with-lincoln-esque-grille-caught) based on the different side creases.

Looks like a Taurus X with the 2011 Edge schnoz on it. (shrug)

I'm just interested to hear the Cd value on this thing. Looks phenomenally aerodynamically refined for what it is, even if it's not the rock crawler off-road enthusiasts want everything to be.

      It's a Land Rover-ized Explorer...
Exactly, they have clearly copied the Land Rover styling cues...
.I was thinking it looks like a 4 dr version of the Land Rover LRX...which isn't a bad thing.
Yeah, i'd say it looks alot like the freelander... especially the front grill!

Idk. Maybe it's just me, but why does every late Ford vehicle have to have the same EXACT grill design??? Nice truck, but, c'mon! For crying out loud! Creativity, people.....

      Let's bring it back. Gosh....
