Apple pie, baseball and Bob Lutz. It doesn't get much more American than that. So why did it take this long for Maximum Bob to appear on the Colbert Report, the most Lincolnishly patriotic show on television? Well the GM vice-chairman pulled up onto the set for last night's episode of the Comedy Central mainstay to talk about the new Chevy Volt.

Of course we wouldn't want to spoil the surprise any more than we already have, but if you missed Colbert last night, then just follow the jump to see Lutz actually at a loss for words (!) while he tries to explain why you can't drive a plug-in hybrid while it's actually plugged in.

Lutz couldn't believe what Colbert was saying. Hilarious!
Is it just me and the fact that I haven't listened to Maximum Bob speak that many times, but why does he sound constipated in this video?

That was great, GM with a sense of humor.

Great video! Had me laughing for weeks!

Lutz was too serious in the beginning..glad he came around near the middle! LMAO!!

I never actually saw Lutz in video before. I usually just see text and pictures.

This guy has almost no emotion to his voice and had a lot of trouble keeping up with colbert. It was funny and all but I expected a bit more charisma from a guy who runs one of the biggest companies in the world.

I want to see Colbert take on the 'Apple Guy'.

Microsoft should have used Colbert instead of Seinfeld, but then if you can screw up using Seinfeld, I dont know that Colbert would have a shot either.

Was still funny though. You got to laugh at yourself and Lutz was obviously a bit thrown early on. It was still laughable and I bet this bit introduced the Volt to a group who might not have heard about it.

That is exactly what I thought. A LOT of people use the Daily Show and the Colbert Report as a source for information.

I just look at the cynical way one of GM's top customer-facing people approaches the Volt and wonder what sort of real commitment do they have? The man fed into every gearhead stereotype - no global warming, can't lay rubber, car has poor performance, only Cal chicks will be into it, Hummer is cool (only time his face showed an expression beyond dead-behind-the-eyes).

In my eyes he couldn't hide his disdain for the people he perceives would want the Volt. Maybe this blustery old-school gearhead thing works when talking to lapdogs in the automotive media but in the real world Lutz came off looking like the dinosaur he is.

I believe that in this day and age corporations spend too much money on useless stuff. By since GM already has PR people why are they letting this fool open his mouth.

Look people always say here that GM vehicles get good MPGs, it's just that GMs image is that its not efficient. Do you wonder where that image come from?

Having said that, as damaging as Bob may be he has some value, now Rick Wagoner on the other hand...........

Love how Bob stuck to his guns on global warming. Til the end my friend...

One questions I would have asked.

Why won't you let the press drive it?

Pretty funny vid... at least Bob is a good sport.

When asked if it would burn rubber, the correct response would have been, "It'll blow the doors off your neighbor's Prius."

      :)
