2017 Bentley Flying Spur

The 4-door Bentley Flying Spur utilizes the same chassis as the 2-door Bentley Continental, and like the Continental, it features a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine that makes an even 500 hp and 488 lb-ft of torque. The upgrade is a 6.0L twin-turbo W12 engine that makes 616 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, while the W12 S increases output to 626 horsepower and 605 lb-ft. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an 8-speed automatic transmission.

For the Flying Spur, Bentley has spent time fine-tuning the comfort level of the car's ride. Everything from the height-adjustable air springs to the anti-roll bars to the suspension bushings have been improved to give a softer, more compliant ride. The active suspension is driver-tunable through the availability of four settings, from Comfort to Sport mode.

While the Flying Spur is quite heavy, weighing in at 5,346 pounds, it's not evident in the performance numbers. The impressive powertrain breathlessly overcomes the inertial tendencies of all that mass, with Bentley able to claim 0-60 times of 4.8 seconds for the V8-powered Spur and 4.3 seconds for the W12. A variable displacement system attempts to keep efficiency under control, with estimates of 20 mpg highway and 12 mpg city for the 12-cylinder version, while mileage climbs to 14 mpg city and 24 mpg highway with the more efficient turbocharged V8.

As would be expected in a sedan at this price, the Flying Spur comes packed with the latest in everything. The stereo itself is based around an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and Bluetooth integrated. It's voice-activated and powers an 8-channel amplifier and can play back just about any media out there. An optional NAIM audio system brings audiophile sound into the Bentley with an 1100-watt amplifier, dual subwoofers and a 6-dsc CD changer. The optional Multi Media Specification package adds a dizzying array of in-car connectivity to the Flying Spur: The rear seats get two integrated 10-inch displays, and two combination DVD/SD/USB media playback devices allow passengers to watch any media they brought with them. Wireless headphones ensure they don't disturb other occupants.

The seats are 10-way power-adjustable, available in an array of leather types and colors. Wood and leather trim just about every other surface. Dual-zone climate control is standard, as are remote control windows and tailgate.

To say the options list is extensive is a dramatic understatement. Bentley offers over 130 exterior color options, including 20 2-tone combinations. Twenty-four interior leather colors are available as well. The Mulliner Driving Specification package includes leather headlining, quilted leather seats, sport pedals, 21-inch alloy wheels and Mulliner-specific trim throughout.

Other options, including carbon-ceramic brakes, are available and come with enlarged rotors. No fewer than 10 different wheel options are available, in sizes ranging from 19-inch through 21-inch. High-performance Pirelli P-Zero tires are included no matter the wheel.

A power sunroof is optional, but can be outfitted with solar-powered fans to provide active ventilation when parked. Adaptive cruise control is available, while veneered picnic tables, a refrigerated bottle cooler, and various veneer options ensure the …
