Vintage 'Western Flyer' RV is a Cure for the Summertime Blues

Looking for the perfect getaway vehicle?

It's amazing what a weekend away can do. No emails, no phone calls, no business meetings, and no deadlines. Fully "unplugging" from the modern world isn't always easy... but oh how worthwhile it is, and for many, the weekend summer road trip is the perfect solution.

Looking for the perfect getaway vehicle? For those with an eye for early to mid-20th century design, this sweeping RV might be a good candidate. It's known as a "Western Flyer," one of three RVs claimed to have been shaped by famed American industrial designer Brooks Stevens in 1941.

It has since been recently rehabbed and refreshed from a claimed dilapidated state, with a few custom touches added. Like it? The vintage RV is up for sale on eBay in Linden, California .

Get behind the wheel of one of these and you certainly won't be mistaken for driving a typical motorhome. The claimed Stevens-designed RV features rounded, aerodynamic, and futuristic lines so representative of the era and its monumental designer.

Stevens may have had a radical, forward thinking approach to car design, but he's remembered fondly as a pioneer in the industry; further design examples from Stevens' automotive CV include the 1949 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide motorcycle, the civilian Jeepster, the edgy Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk, and even the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

According to Bring a Trailer, during the cosmetic and mechanical restoration of this Western Flyer, a few custom touches were added, including a new grille and mirrors. The restoration process is claimed to have taken seven months to complete.

There are quite a few new bits beneath this Western Flyer body however. According to the listing, the RV body now resides upon a newer Ford Super Duty motor home chassis, complete with a massive 460ci Ford fuel-injected V8 and matching automatic transmission.

Inside things are bit freshened up as well. The RV interior features a mix of tan and crimson upholstery, a Tempur-Pedic mattress at the rear, as well as a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink, two-burner gas range, wood cabinets, and a small refrigerator. Black, gray, and fresh water tanks also find a home beneath the RV.

All in all, it's not the RV for everyone, especially if you don't like being inundated with questions at every highway rest stop. Then again, you won't likely find another one of these in passing on the highway. Currently bidding sits just shy of $66,100 with the reserve price unmet.
