Man ticketed after he was caught reading while driving

A cop in Minnesota couldn't believe just how distracted one driver was after he pulled him over for reading while driving. An officer in Eagan, MN pulled over a driver for failing to stay inside a lane and not keeping up with traffic on Highway 149, according to NBC4i. When the officer approached the vehicle he caught the driver trying to balance a tablet on his steering wheel. Apparently the man was reading while driving. He admitted to reading a James Patterson novel while behind the wheel. While the driver was contrite, he was still ticketed for distracted driving. The police department tweeted about the incident, saying "Arrive alive, don't novel and drive."

While a funny tweet, distracted driving is a serious problem. Though we currently associate distracted driving with texting and phone use, the truth is that anything that takes a driver's eyes off the road counts as a distraction. In 2013, the last year such data is available, 3,154 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. While cell phones are often vilified for causing crashes, in-car infotainment systems, children, and even plain old daydreaming are also major distractions on the road.
