Volvo S90 shakes down turbodiesel in Spain

Automakers love building ultra-luxurious, loaded-to-the-gills vehicles. But sometimes, consumers just want something basic, even if it is the company's flagship model. Take this Volvo S90, spied testing in sunny Spain.

According to our spies, this is the basic version of the new top-end Volvo sedan, with a modest, 190-horsepower, four-cylinder turbodiesel under the hood. Set to replace the positively Pre-Cambrian S80, this S90 is still fitted with quite a lot of camouflage, although our spies point to the handsome new XC90 as the primary design inspiration. That, in turn, should mean some of the finer details of the Concept Estate and Concept Coupe are featured on this big four door.

The new S90 will likely breed much more than a simple luxury sedan, though. Its platform, our spies report, will underpin a V70-replacing V90, which in turn will lead to a lifted V90 Cross Country. Expect these new models to mirror the engine lineup of the XC90, which could indicate all-wheel-drive capability for the sedan shown above, while the interior treatment will likely borrow a page from Volvo's range-topping SUV.
