Zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds? That's just ludicrous. I'm Adam Morath and this is your Autoblog Minute

On Friday, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors announced a new "ludicrous mode" for it's Model S sedan, which enables zero to 60 launches in just 2.8 seconds. The California-based automaker had previously pushed the bounds of electric vehicle performance with "insane mode," which propelled the dual motor P85D performance version of the Model S to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, as Autoblog showcased in an episode of Translogic.

So what accounts for the upgrade in performance? Tesla developed an advanced smart fuse for its battery that increases max amp throughput from 1300 to 1500 amps. This means a 10% improvement in 0-60 times and a 20% improvement in the time to reach the vehicle's top speed of 155 miles per hour.

Of course those gaudy numbers come at a cost. The "ludicrous mode" option tacks an extra $10 K on top of the P85D's $87 thousand 5 hundred dollar price tag, which includes estimated incentives and gas savings. But what if you already purchased your Model S and are itching for a even faster ride? Current P85D owners can upgrade to ludicrous mode for $5 thousand dollars plus labor.

One word of advice: If you see a Tesla coming at you, get out the way.
