A new Ford Taurus is on the way, at least for some markets. As part of a huge unveiling of seven models for the Asia Pacific market at the Shanghai Motor Show, Ford is announcing the debut of the company's next-gen large sedan on April 18 just before the event in China begins.

Unfortunately, the Taurus that we see in Shanghai might not signal too much about the future version in the US. Ford spokesperson Monique Brentley tells Autoblog that this debut is specifically for the Chinese market, and the Blue Oval isn't saying whether any of this updated look will come across the Pacific.

We got a tiny preview of the new Taurus earlier this year when one was spotted wearing heavy camouflage while testing in China. That one retained the sedan's hexagonal grille but added more horizontal chrome slats. It also featured reshaped headlights and a broad, lower air dam. Previous reports have indicated the next-gen model might be built around a stretched and widened version of the Fusion platform, and a major goal during development was shedding as many pounds as possible. With little time before the official unveiling, it won't be long until we'll know much of this for sure.

SHANGHAI, China, April 2, 2015 – Taking another bold step to fulfill its promise of introducing 15 new vehicles to China by 2015, Ford will unveil the new Ford Taurus at Auto Shanghai 2015, with a special pre-show event on April 18. Ford's new flagship sedan for China will take the stage at the auto show, along with six other new vehicles making their debuts in Asia Pacific.

"We are looking forward to taking the wraps off seven new vehicles for our customers in China and continuing our delivery of great products and innovative technologies," said John Lawler, chairman and CEO, Ford China. "With the new Ford Taurus, our Ford Performance vehicles, and a few other surprises, there will truly be something for everyone."

Ford is bringing the storied Taurus nameplate to China for the first time with a sophisticated, expressive large sedan designed especially to meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

Making use of Ford's global expertise in vehicle design and development, and incorporating advanced technologies, the new Ford Taurus is the latest proof of Ford's commitment to bringing more world-class vehicles to consumers in China.

Also at the Shanghai show, the Ford GT, a stunning new ultra-high-performance supercar, will shine a spotlight on the company's Ford Performance team, which will deliver more than 12 new performance vehicles for global enthusiasts through 2020. Pulling together the company's innovations in light-weighting, aerodynamics and driver-centric technology, the new Ford GT sets new performance standards and serves as a technological showcase for Ford's global product development capabilities.

Sharing the stage with the GT, the new Ford Focus RS and new Ford Focus ST also will make their Asia Pacific debuts. The latest generation of high-performance hatchbacks pioneer advanced technology to deliver the ultimate fun-to-drive experience.

"Bringing our Ford Performance lineup to Shanghai is not just incredibly exciting for us and for visitors to the show. It also shows just how central innovation is to us as a company," said Trevor Worthington, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific. "Ever since Henry Ford won the Sweepstakes Race 114 years ago, performance and racing have been a crucial part of how we innovate."

In addition to an opportunity to see Ford's full range of vehicles for China, visitors to Ford's stand will have the chance to take to a virtual race track and experience the excitement of Ford Performance first-hand. An advanced Focus ST Racing Simulator seats up to three people, letting visitors take their friends on the ride of their life – or compete for the top spot on the leaderboard.

Visitors looking for a more relaxing experience can head to the Ford Innovation Lab to recharge their mobile devices and learn how ideas and technological innovations from Ford are helping to make the world a better place. A 360-degree Cloud Camera will offer a unique view and let visitors create a souvenir of the show to share online.

A trip to the Mustang Garage will help visitors experience the heritage, freedom and fun symbolized by the iconic pony car, whether it's with a limited-edition Mustang nail polish or a pop art Mustang souvenir.

For an extraordinary and immersive show experience, visitors can use virtual reality gear – similar to technology used by Ford engineers – to experience how innovations like Ford's SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system help you in the real world. An Oculus Rift SYNC Driving Game will show visitors how SYNC lets you stay connected while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Auto Shanghai 2015 runs from April 22 to April 29 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai).
