Autoblog's Most Popular Stories of 2013

Oh, Internet – you crazy. We throw dozens of stories out into the great unknown each and every day, and while some just sink to the bottom of the ocean, others become hugely popular. Sure, we know that things like the reveal of the new Ford Mustang will be big hits (spoiler alert!), but other times, the popularity of a story absolutely baffles us.

So, in keeping with tradition, we bring you a Top 10 list of the most popular stories published on Autoblog in the year 2013 (complete with the also traditional Betty White lead image). Have a look below to see what garnered the most views this year, and then tell us what you think should or shouldn't have made the cut in Comments.

10. 2014 Jeep Cherokee gets official in a hurry

2014 Jeep Cherokee

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee was no doubt one of the more polarizing debuts of the year. The new, Alfa Romeo-based small Jeep certainly warped our minds in terms of its styling, and its new nine-speed automatic transmission was certainly a huge talking point – especially when it caused Chrysler to delay the crossover's launch. Not long after leaked images appeared on the web, a full smattering of information and images were released, and our readers certainly had a lot to say – this one story alone garnered over 1,000 comments.

09. The List #0147: Escape a Car Underwater

The List

Would you know what to do if your car plunged into the water and started to sink? There'd be some panic involved, sure, but knowing how to handle this dangerous situation is critical, and The List hosts Jessi and Patrick learned the different ways in which you can quickly and safely escape a sinking car. Don't try this at home.

08. Mythbusters tests which is more efficient, four-way stop or roundabout

Mythbusters roundabout test

Roundabouts aren't nearly as common here in the States as they are in other parts of the world, especially Europe. Here in America, we're far more accustomed to the idea of a four-way stop, even though there seem to be plenty of motorists who can't quite grasp that concept, either. The team at Mythbusters sought to find out which system is actually more efficient. The result may surprise you.

07. 2015 Ford Mustang leaked in Autoweek

Ford Mustang leaked in Autoweek

Full disclosure: This will not be the first 2015 Ford Mustang-related story on this list. Considering how important this debut was, we aren't surprised. Just days before all of the official 'Stang info hit the web, the cover of Autoweek was leaked, showing Ford's new Pony in all its glory. We imagine the folks at Ford were none to happy about this accidental embargo break, but hey, it certainly made for one heck of a popular story.

06. Land Rover driver caught on video mowing down NYC motorcyclists

Land Rover motorcyclist story

What a mess this story was. Let's recap: A video surfaced on YouTube showing an altercation between the driver of a Land Rover Range Rover Sport and a group of motorcyclists in New York. It appears the Land Rover driver nudged one of the motorcyclists, and in the subsequent updates, we learned that the bikers allegedly attacked the SUV driver, at which point he attempted to escape, running down a number of other riders in the process. This one was crazy, no doubt; be sure to read the followup story that came later.

05. 2015 Ford Mustang shows its face in public

2015 Ford Mustang spy shots

Long before leaked images or official information appeared, the only hot Mustang news we had to go on were spy shots. And these were the best. This set of photos clearly revealed the 'Stang's new face, showing off its Evos-inspired design cues. Of course, the comments on this post were plentiful, with a lot of love/hate discussion about the new Mustang's design.

04. 2015 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon unveiled

2015 GMC Yukon Denali

The year 2013 was a big one for US automakers – Mustangs and Cherokees aside. General Motors took the wraps off its new line of fullsize SUVs – the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon, as well as the new Cadillac Escalade. GM didn't drastically change its big sport-ute formula, but instead gave its large SUVs a host of welcome updates, taking cues from the recently redesigned Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

03. Deep Dive: 2015 Ford Mustang GT

2015 Ford Mustang

Oh, hey. Another Mustang story. Makes sense, though – this was a huge debut for Ford. While leaked images and spy shots gave us a nice, early look at the new Mustang, our in-depth Deep Dive story was still far more popular. Here, we divulged everything there is to know about the Mustang so far, and boy, we sure are excited to get behind the wheel of this darling in the coming year. Don't forget about all of our other 2015 Mustang coverage, too.

02. VW Type 2 Microbus production ending with Kombi Last Edition

Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus Kombi

The Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus was the longest-produced model in the automotive industry. After 56 years in production in Brazil, the legendary van was finally put to rest, and Volkswagen sent it off with this killer Kombi Last Edition. Only 600 of these buses will be produced before new safety regulations force VW to axe the model, and considering how popular this thing has been over more than half a decade, it's only fitting that this was the second most-viewed post of the year. Of course a front-page landing on Reddit certainly helped boost this story's traffic, too.

01. Deep Dive: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray

The year 2013 may have ended with the debut of the very hot Ford Mustang, but the year was kicked off in a big way with the launch of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Right when it launched at this year's Detroit Auto Show, we had a full Deep Dive of coverage ready to go, revealing everything we knew about Chevy's new C7 at the time. Since then, we've driven the 'Vettetwice – and to say we're impressed would surely be an understatement. Not only was this Corvette Deep Dive the most popular post on Autoblog this year (fun fact: its accompanying photos made up the most-viewed gallery of 2013), the new coupe garnered big awards from Automobile, Road & Track, and most recently, has been named a finalist for the 2014 North American Car of the Year. Bravo!
