Yesterday we covered a crash at the Unlimited 500+ drag race in Moscow, featuring a Nissan GT-R, but today brings better news: a Lamborghini Gallardo making 2,005 horsepower successfully went 250 miles per hour on the one-mile strip in 23.9 seconds without crashing. That's the good part. The bad part is the single-serving supercar burst into flames immediately after it crossed the finish line. Fortunately the driver was able to quickly bring the Lamborghini to a stop and get out of the car, but we have a feeling it will need some engine work before it sees any more action. That and perhaps a new paint job.

Underground Racing tuned the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera's V10 to such an astronomical power output with the help of what sounds like twin-turbochargers (which is typical of UR builds). But despite the very impressive mile time, it's still hard not to feel sorry for the poor engine, which just couldn't take the pressure. Watch the 2,005-hp Gallardo reach 250 mph - then catch fire - in the video below.

How about you post some more details of why the engine caught fire? Another shop altered the tuning after it left Underground. From Kevin @ Underground: "Yep, really sucks. His shop over there changed the intercooler to a bigger one to "Get more power". They also changed a few other things along with the re mapping up the MoTeC. We got a look at the data and it was VERY LEAN. Too bad, I hate it for the owner. Cant blame them for trying to go faster I guess. He's a great customer, just wanting to go faster. We are getting another engine together for them. It will happen again if they don't get the A/F under control."

You try and put 2005 hp down to the ground, all wheel drive or not, and let me know how it works out for you.

Don't worry folks, this guy is far more familiar with sub 300hp Toyota's where all you do is put the pedal down and read a newspaper (probably get a few articles in before the mile passes). He isn't able to grasp the fact that a 2000HP car doesn't exactly drive like grandmas grocery getter.

Mile events aren't about launches. You have to slowly pour in the power and keep progressing. It's about maximum acceleration with minimum wheel spin. Wheel spin kills mile times and MPH's. My mile car is equipped with a race logic traction control system which bogs the engine down about the same as the lambo in this video when it senses slip depending on the slip percentage you dial in (fully adjustable on the race logic).

It is tuned that way, limits boost in lower gears to prevent wheelspin. You honestly don't know much about anything, including your beloved Toyotas....

Didn't watch it. I won't watch anything with ads. Yes, I understand people have to pay the bills, but not at the expense of my own time.

At least it burst into flames upon achieving something, rather than bursting into flames just sitting on the side of the road.

Ken Duttweiler builds 2,300 hp twin-turbocharged small block Chevys that run at full throttle for FOUR MILES at Bonneville. Sorry, not impressed with this Italian fireball...

Eh. I prefer the other italian supercar that bursts into flames -- at least those are something to cry about.
