Scooter Land Speed Federation announces cross-country scooter dash

Classic and modern scooters, and a few motorcycles, will be racing coast-to-coast next May in the 2013 Real Cannonball Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. The rally starts May 4 and will cover 2,926 miles between the famed Red Ball Garage in Manhattan, NY and the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, CA.

The race is being sponsored through a partnership between Motor Scooter International Land Speed Federation and the Lake Erie Loop. MSILSF will register and organize scooter entrants, and Lake Erie Loop will do the same for motorcycle entrants. Both organizations will donate a percentage of the entry proceeds to their respective charities. The Lake Erie Loop is a 650-mile event started in 2003 that circumnavigates Lake Erie. Portions of that group's entry fees are donated for the benefit of pediatric burn victims.

Bikes will be run in one of five classes to keep competition as close as possible. Class I is 50 to 100cc bikes, Class II is 101 to 175cc scooters and Class III is 176 to 300cc whoppers. Motorcycles will race in Class IV and V, in the 301 to 650cc and 651 to 850cc categories, respectively. All racers must have an approved MSILSF competition license, and all bikes must be street legal.

Racers will have a postcard time stamped at the starting point, which they'll mail to the finish for final time tabulations. They'll pick up a receipt at every gas stop and overnight hotel stop, and will document any breakdowns that might include towing and repairs.

The Real Cannonball Sea-To-Shining-Sea is not affiliated with the Scooter Cannonball Run, a 2,500-mile run that takes place semi-annually on even years.
