Who said you can't have an iPhone-like experience in your car? Many carmakers have tried to make it easy to integrate smartphones into car infotainment, but most produce a somehow flawed experience. That notion can be put to rest today with the release of Pioneer's new AppRadio.
Made for the iPhone power user, AppRadio is designed for a different experience. No CD Player. No satellite radio. Instead all of the entertainment options are carried over from popular iOS apps. Pioneer currently has five partners for apps that run on the AppRadio: MotionX GPS for turn-by-turn directions; Google Maps for local searches of destinations; INRIX Traffic for finding the best traffic routes; RDIO for on-demand music playback; and Pandora, the most popular streaming music app.
The current set of apps are pretty good, and include just about everything you'd need when driving -- though Yelp has yet to be included. More apps are expected when AppRadio launches in late June for less than $500.
AppRadio is able to leverage the power of the iPhone 4 to run data-intense applications and connect to 3G wireless networks. Most users will find the simplicity amazing, not to mention its wickedly quick navigation and nearly perfect touchscreen.
All applications maintain visuals similar to the iOS experience, but are ported to a larger 6.1-inch capacitive touchscreen -- an automotive first. Pioneer was able to do this by using Apple's iPod Out feature, essentially sending the native app interface to the Pioneer headunit over the dock connector. All that's required from app developers is the inclusion of Pioneer's API into their app; users just need to have the most updated app.
In case the iPhone is out of service range, AppRadio has a built-in AM/FM tuner and a GPS receiver.
For now the AppRadio is built for Apple iOS only, more specifically iPhone 4 and iPod Touch (4th Gen). You can bet that Pioneer will look into getting Android support in the future.

Google Maps appears on the AppRadio screen with the same mapping information and features that consumers are familiar with. The system enables users to search², route to locations, view route directions and create bookmarks with the ability to drop pins directly on the map.

This promotes a safer driving experience, as all of AppRadio's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation.
