High School students head to model hydrogen fuel cell car challenge this weekend

The Department of Energy and GM are coordinating a weekend’s worth of competition for high school students from across the country. The National Science Bowl (NSB) features all the tense competition of the question and answer science bowl sessions and al the excitement of a car race (see photo, and always remember that science is a blast).
There are two parts to the model hydrogen fuel cell car challenge part of the NSB. The first is the straightforward speed challenge. The second is getting the model cars to drive up the steepest six-foot incline. Participants must build their cars using only parts from a kit provided at the competition, but they may bring plans and designs with them.

One kind of weird specification: the model cars must display sponsor’s stickers. Hat tip to reader Matt Simmons. [Source: Department of Energy, Photo from 2004 competition]
