South Dakota health officials warned Thursday that a number of people who attended the 10-day Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this month, including some who came from out of state, have come down with COVID-19. Department of Health officials did not give an exact number of rallygoers who tested positive, but they said it was under 25. Thousands of bikers poured into the small South Dakota city of Sturgis on Friday as the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally rumbled to life despite fears it could lead to a massive coronavirus outbreak. The rally could become one of the largest public gatherings since the pandemic began, with organizers expecting 250,000 people from all over the country to make their way through Sturgis during the 10-day event.

Sturgis is on. The message has been broadcast across social media as South Dakota, which has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, braces to host hundreds of thousands of bikers for the 80th edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. More than 250,000 people are expected to rumble through western South Dakota, seeking the freedom of cruising the boundless landscapes in a state that has skipped lockdowns.

It's difficult to imagine what an otherwise small city like Sturgis would look like with over 100,000 motorcyclists looking for places to park. Unless you take to the sky for a birds-eye view.

Harley-Davidson has inked a deal with Sturgis, SD, to be the official sponsor of the annual motorcycle rally there for the next 75 years. In addition, the company is building the permanent plaza along the city's main street with 75 bricks from the original factory, museum and parking lot of its headquarters.
