Seat gets silly with the frilly, shows car made of lace

European hatchbacks tend to be as much about style as they are about substance. For proof, look no further to the fashion collaborations that have given us the Fiat 500 Gucci edition, the Citroën DS3 by Yves Saint Laurent and a seemingly endless stream of one-off Minis done up by various fashion designers for charity. Even the pint-sized Mii – Seat's version of the Volkswagen Up! – has bred a special edition by Spanish clothing label Mango. But the example you see here takes the idea even further.
This particular Seat has been constructed entirely out of lace. That's right, the same stuff they use to make lingerie and doilies. Over the course of three days, a team of eight artisans applied nearly 50 yards of nude-colored cotton lace (though from our happy experience, the color of "nude" can vary greatly), over 10 yards of black lace (for the wheels), another 70+ yards of jewel-embellished lace trimming and 55 pounds of resin to set it all in place.

The result is a full-scale reproduction of the diminutive city car recreated in the frilly stuff, all to celebrate the arrival of the Seat Mii by Mango on the British market.

SEAT REVEALS WORLD'S FIRST FABRIC CAR CONSTRUCTED FROM LACE
Full size lace replica of SEAT's Mii by MANGO city car

SEAT, the Spanish design-led car brand, today unveiled the world's first fabric car, constructed entirely of lace, with jewel trim embellishment. Celebrating the UK availability of its SEAT Mii by MANGO city car, the fashion-inspired full size replica was designed and constructed in London over a period of three days.

The making of the world's first fabric car, in numbers:
3 day build in London based studio
45 metres of nude coloured cotton lace
25 kilos of resin to set the lace
10 metres of black cotton lace to build four 3D alloy wheels
70 metres of lace trimming with jewel embellishment
8 strong specialist team, led by hot design talent, Ashley Joiner

"This is SEAT's first fashion collaboration and what better way to celebrate our partnership with MANGO, than to create the world's first fabric car. The Mii by MANGO city car provides the most stylish way to travel and shop and we're delighted to have incorporated these values into such a creative and innovative project," said Chris Stevens, Head of Marketing, SEAT UK.

Ashley Joiner, a creative director and graduate of Central Saint Martins, was brought on board to manage the project, from conception through to delivery. He said: "Lace is one of the hottest fashion trends right now, so it made sense to use lace as the primary material for the SEAT Mii by MANGO, a fashion-inspired city car. I'm absolutely thrilled to be part of this project, which combines my film and design experience."

The SEAT Mii by MANGO is a special edition, eye-catching city car available exclusively in either nude or black, in three- or five-door form, with a contrasting interior including Alcantara upholstery. Boasting atom grey door mirrors, stylish 15" alloy wheels, chrome door strips and a spacious boot, the flagship Mii is the ideal fashion accessory, from catwalk to high street.

The SEAT Mii by MANGO is available now, priced from £10,995 on the road. Please visit: www.seat.co.uk for more information.
