Since its introduction in 2008, the Nissan GT-R has seen a steady increase of power and price almost every year, but the big news for the next-gen supercar might be an increase in production. Automotive News recently spoke with newly appointed GT-R chief engineer Kinishi Tanuma who said Nissan needs "more of a volume car." Nissan has sold a little more than 2,000 GT-Rs in the US since 2012 – 1,188 last year and 952 so far this year.

Of course, a key limiting factor in the GT-R's production is its hand-built engine. Currently, only four people are qualified to build the GT-R's twin-turbo V6, but Tanuma says a fifth is in training. Even if production numbers are raised, Nissan also wants to add more quality and value into the GT-R. There is still no word as to what kind of timeframe Nissan is looking to start pumping out more GT-Rs, but with a new Nismo model rumored to be bringing a two-second 0-60 time, demand is sure to be on the rise.

        But at the same time, very few people can utilize 500+ hp anyway. It doesn't need to be made available to the masses or even affordable, when talking about something that puts out excessive performance.

      Hopefully they'll be able to lower the weight on these things too. Have a (very lucky) friend who tracked a GTR for a while but it was eating through perishable parts like a fat kid eats M&Ms. Then, when he switched to a 997 Turbo S, he actually found it to be CHEAPER to own than the GTR. A $140,000 Porsche was cheaper to maintain than a $80,000 Nissan, sans tax/insurance of course. It's true, later down the line when the motors/turbos need to be rebuilt, it'll likely be the Porsche that'll carry the highest repair bill (though the GTR might still have a more expensive tranny), but still, this is something that Nissan should be able to improve.

        But how much cheaper? If it costs within 20%, then I don't think that it's really substantial. And does your friend drive the Porsche the way he drove the GT-R? Just curious. But don't get me wrong, Nissan should certainly look into how to make the maintenance a bit easier to endure. But despite its sticker price, the maintenance is likely not too far off of what it costs to maintain other cars with very similar performance, though I'd guess that the Z06 and ZR1 might be a little easier on the wallet.

          The Porsche was a substitute for the GTR, he drove/tracked both in the same manner and puts down similar lap times (if not a bit quicker with the Porsche as he felt he was more comfortable pushing the car harder because it was lighter). Never mentioned hard numbers, but did say he was saving "thousands" in tires and brake pads alone, which when considering he went though at least one full set of each with every session in the GTR, is not hard to imagine. The Porsche is able to do multiple sessions on brakes and he's never been nervous about driving home on the tires, unlike the GTR. And as for the Vette argument, he's well aware of the bang/buck Vettes offer. He prefers AWD cars (he's not comfortable with his recovery skills and prefers the dynamics good AWD platforms offer) and he's just not into Vettes. All in all, it's of course understandable that the GTR wouldn't be cheap to maintain, especially given it's level of performance. Just saying that knocking off some weight will not only help it with performance but also in tracking costs, an area that owners are known to criticize about.

        these things are track turkeys,...I've tracked numerous times,..with my Porsche club brethren,..and, while yes!,..the gtr's are VERY fast?,..they need "cool-off' periods,..and overheat all the time,..and DO chew thru tires,..my friends who have them...say,.they are VERY expensive to track...and that "4 laps,..then a cool down" crap is REALLY a killer to having a good time at the track with this car,..other cars,..go and go and go,..so,..our experience has been?,..fast,..yes!,..but NOT consistant and reliable track car,..which also dramatically hurts it's rep...

      It started out at a great price, but now its too expensive and as always, its too easy to drive. You either need a beautiful car for the image people or a fun driver for the true driving fans and this is neither. I'm sure it really is fun to drive because of the raw acceleration, but with AWD and a DCT, its not much of a challenge.

      I like the idea of the GT-R becoming higher volume and presumably lower price. However, I have to wonder what this means for the 370Z and the G37 (er...Q##?). There is a big price gap between the Z and the GT-R, but if they bring the GT-R down in price, they're going to take some 370Z/Infiniti sales. Maybe they could also trim some fat and dollars from the 370Z...

        I wouldn't worry about that. The two are way too far in price, and the GT-R has a lot of breathing room, as it's already over $30,000 more than what it was when it was first launched. And even when it was that much ($70,000), it wasn't exactly cross-shopped with the 370Z/G37.

        I can believe that a Porsche dealer would provide a better, more enjoyable experience than a Nissan dealer. On the other hand, I have to object to the generalization of Porsche people as all cheery and friendly -- as with any group, and stereotypically even more, there are at least a handful of d-bags among the Porsche faithful.

        That is because the "better" Datsun folks prefer the Z, I think it is the "chip on the shoulder" issue because while it is a good car, it is not a truly great car. It is not the best of the JDM offerings, it is not the good looking option, not a sleeper option, not cheap, and not a "badge" appeal option either. Actually, the GTR guys also describe the non-sportscar Porsche offering too.

        It's probably because of the novelty and the image of the car. It was not even in the US until the R35 generation. The R33 and R34 were like mythical beasts to JDM/ import tuner fanboys so I guess that air is still around with the R35 GT-R. Until the current gen, it was in video games and movies that Americans could connect with the GT-R. Cars like the 911 have been around for decades in the US so there is no novelty that would perpetuate an exclusive fan base (or illusion of it) like the GT-R. Sucks to hear that GT-R owners in your scene think they're holier than thou.

        so what john said!...we too considered this car in '09,..and were treated like crap by the very "douche" like sales staff at the Nissan dealer selling them,,...and wouldn't let us test drive the car,..THEN!,..proceeded to insult the 08 911 turbo we drove up in!,..well,..i guess Porsche IS having the last laff there,..as,..they now sell about 1000 911's,..at about the same price point?,..AND!,..the 911 is a much weaker car!?,...[the gtr sold last month...sept '13...56!,..in the u.s.!,..versus almost 1000 911's,..and now 1400 vettes a month,...I personally think,..and have had expeience,..with the douch-like tools that buy this turd,..and john blaze hit the nail on the head!
