Well-known NASCAR racer Dick Trickle has dies of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Trickle was 71 years of age.

According to reports, police in Lincoln County, NC were informed via an anonymous phone call (very likely made by Trickle himself) prior to the suicide where to find the body. Trickle's body was found at the Forest Lawn Cemetary in Boger City, NC, next to his pickup truck.

Our thoughts go out to Trickle's friends and family. Please keep any comments respectful and remember that this is not the time for jokes.

Its a shame. I can't imagine what would make a person take their own life, all I can say is my condolences go out to his family :(

RIP :( My heart sank when I read the headline a little bit ago. Definitely one of my favorite drivers to watch while growing up.

That's sad I remember him smoking cigarettes during red and yellow flags at races. He was an amazing short track racer, and I think he won his last race at South Boston a long time ago in Busch Series. I remember him in the 90 car back in WC days. Terrible news. Sport loses another legend.

RIP, Dick... one of the toughest drivers in the history of the racing. He started racing Cup right about the time I started watching. I'm curious why he'd commit suicide so late in life.

Could have been sick, in pain or both and just couldn't take it anymore. RIP.

Real nice of DICK to leave his impending suicide phonecall on a 911 dispatcher to have to live with the memory of that call for the rest of their lives. Yes, it is their job to do so, but he obviously was really sick in the head to do it. What a way to go out after a great life in public as a racer. Now instead a loser, a quitter, weak. If there is a hell, people who kill themselves deserve to go there.

Wow. No point in waiting to find out what might have driven him to it? Just jump right in and be a jerk.

Consider yourself very lucky that you obviously haven't had to watch a family member shrivel down to bones from cancer. We don't know if this suicide had anything to do with that, or if it was just from grief.
