The not-yet-ready-for-primetime 2012 Honda Civic saw it quickly returned to sender for refurbishment, now the Acura ILX is headed in the same direction in its very first year. Automotive News reports that the small, Civic-based sedan from Honda's luxury brand isn't meeting sales expectations, with an annualized rate of 22,000 to 24,000 sales instead of the 30,000 the company is after. More telling is that the ILX "is being outsold by the Buick Verano, Volkswagen CC and Audi A4," and, except for two months since it launched, it has also been outdone by the Acura TSX it is meant to replace.

Part of the cause has been the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine: its 150 horsepower to motivate a sedan that can weigh up to 2,970 pounds doesn't offer the kind of performance or value experience that buyers in the segment respond to. Another big issue is that the top-level 2.4-liter engine is only offered with a six-speed manual even though most buyers of the highest trim don't really want to shift their own gears. Lastly, the ILX might not put enough space between it and its frugal underpinnings – our first drive review pegged it as "the world's nicest Honda Civic."

An automatic transmission is on the way for the 2.4-liter, but it isn't clear when. And while Honda admits that the 2.0-liter is underpowered and Automotive News says it's on the way out, the company hasn't yet said how that situation will be corrected.

make the 2.4 the base engine and slap a turbo on the 2.0... maybe have two versions of the turbo. a 250-260-hp version and a 300-310-hp version! stop playing catch up and do it right the first time!

Seriously - why not go for the throat with the first stab instead of tepidly tip-toeing into the fight? I don't get this. This car has the looks. Add a turbo'd engine around 240HP and it would be a pretty strong competitor.

The problem with the ILX from day one was the price. I don't think it looks that bad but how can you really justify $30k for a fancy Civic when the TSX is right next to it for the same price. Buy a Civic Si (if you want small) or buy a TSX....simple as that. The 2.4l ILX should have been $25k to be competitive...and give us the the option on whether or not we want the tech package!!! I just bought the TSX SE 6spd and I was pist I couldn't get the tech package! Who's lame idea was that anyway???

I thought luxury brands get updated and then trickle down to the common brands......this is quite perplexing..

Poll: Downvote me if you would take the Acura ILX 2.4 Upvote if you would take a similarly equipped verano turbo.

Biggest mistake is trying to replace TSX with this junk Underpowered with ugly proportions, no wonder it doesn't sell well.

Believe it or not, I actually saw more of these on the road than the ATS.

Seeing as how this came out BEFORE the ATS, I am not surprised.

At the ILX's price range you'd be crazy to get this over the 2013 Honda Accord.

I was wondering why no body gives Acura a bunch of crap for their naming scheme like they do Lincoln? What the heck is MDX, ILX, RSX, ZDX? Also, this seems just like the same badge engineering that people give Ford and Lincoln more crap about. Just like the one quote "This is the worlds finest Civic" Just saying.

No one gives them crap for alphanumeric names? Trust me. They get a lot more crap than they probably asked for for dropping names like Legend, Vigor and Integra.

That is true. Industry analysts rank the decision to drop the Legend name up there with New Coke in the annals of stupid marketing decisions.

Problem is the Integr was acutally casting a shadow ovr the Acura name. It was such a fantastic car it did not matter that it was an acura. That's why they dropped the names, they wanted Acura to get better brand recognition. Well that worked well.

At the end of the day, do you care about the name of the car, or if the car delivers? Acura have some of the most involving/ fun to drive cars (TSX, TL, MDX , ILX 2.4 not to mention the old integra, NSX) and highest resale values.

Will they fix the rear? Every time I see it in profile, the from the middle of the rear side window back, all I see is ZDX for some reason, and that is most definitely NOT a good thing. Nice to hear an auto is on the way for the 2.4L car, as that is the only version I'd be interested in, but I'm not looking to buy stick right now (and certainly not a Honda).
