IED McLaren Torok concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

A McLaren crossover? You can't be serious? Well, no more serious than Lamborghini or Porsche. Both of these have done sport-utes, and word has it that Maserati will be joining them soon.

This project, however, comes a couple of steps short of that. Collaborating with McLaren, the students at Turin's Instituto Europeo di Design (IED) were assigned to create their vision of what a McLaren crossover could look like, circa 2020. The assignment called for hybrid drivetrains, mid-engine layouts, two-seat cabins and four-wheel drive. Thirty-three designs resulted, which were whittled down to 11 finalists and three winners.

The Holon, Torok and Bio Renovatio are what the winners were called, each to be made into a 1:4 scale model. Like 'em or hate 'em, that's as far as they're likely to go, but for the students who created them the sky is the proverbial limit. Check 'em out in the gallery below and the trio of videos after the jump.

These designs will never pass crash standards, not to mention they are pretty tacky.

Oh my... It seems more a crossover between a McLaren and a car crash. Thank you for sharing, though. One never stops learning. --- http://www.accademiaitaliana.com/italian-school.php

nooo!! my eyes, it burns!!! :O

Actually, I think that Mazda is more down to earth and reasonable with their concept designs than these.

Only 8, 10, and 11 are somewhat feasible.
And I do agree that as design concepts they are fine. But when imagining what something might look like, there should be a lot more realism than these portray. A few of them could barely pass as 3/4/5 door sedans, much less crossovers. I've loved drawing cars and figuring out appropriate shapes and angles, I even considered industrial/automotive design, but I realized that the industry is way too subjective and I'm not "creative" enough for it. Besides, I like working on stuff with my hands more than drawing anyways. I just feel these designs are better suited for video games as some scantily clad heroines car (which two of these feature *rolls eyes*) than as an idea for what the future *could* be.

Are most of these designs assuming that the earth will be a post-apocalyptic wasteland by 2020? I don't get why they all look like off-road sand rails. The only car I like is the one with the gulf livery. I think it's reasonable. The rest suck. Not sure how people skilled enough to make the images themselves couldn't do a better job designing them.

Man, if you have to point out what part of the car is doors, I think you've messed up.

What is the point in these "concepts"? They are all ugly and will never make into to production (at least not in the next 50 years or so).
Umm, I said nothing close to saying that all design studios should be shut down, moron. All I was getting at is that these designs are way ahead of their time. Maybe you should think a little before writing a smart a$$ comment.

Not asking you to prove anything. Feeling a little insecure about something?
Not sure why you're giving me your resume. Why would you having a degree in engineering mean you know anything about design/styling? Good effort though.
I guess by your reasoning, we should just shut down all transportation design schools. If you knew who some of the tutors were that teach at IED, you would change your mind.
Maybe you need to learn about what students do in a transportation design course. They do very conceptual things. That's why they are students and that's why these are called concepts. And by you saying these are pointless suggests that you think there is no need for it to be happening.

Maybe you should learn about the subject matter before you make a stupid comment on something you clearly know nothing about. Jackass.

The assignment called for hybrid drivetrains, mid-engine layouts, two-seat cabins and four-wheel drive.

So basically, take todays SUV's and make them even more pointless by reducing the capability.

What kind of assignment is that, I mean you could ask for one-wheel drive, three-axle vehicles with solar panels and climbing abilitys, it would have the same purpose.

it really bummed me out to realize that when I see "IED" now all I read is "Improvised Explosive Device" - thanks CNN :(

I hope the students take it personally when I say these all suck, tremendously. Take that as a hint and start drawing cars.

I like the Gulf one. Looks a bit Super Trax. The red one is pretty cool, as off roader things go. Looks a bit Warthoggy.
