Sondergard Automotive Prototype – Click above for high-res image gallery

It's hard to get a car company off of the ground these days – just look at Tesla. Despite strong financial backing from the federal government, partnerships with companies like Mercedes-Benz and Toyota and a strong IPO, many are still gun shy of Tesla stock. It's notoriously difficult to come up with the kind of capital necessary to move a vehicle from a computer rendering to a full-blown production prototype, which may be why it appears that Sondergard Automotive has taken to courting investors via the miracle of eBay Motors. The company is primarily concerned with building a low-weight, low-emission sports car that's as fun to drive as it is eco friendly.

According to the eBay ad, the company has already come up with one prototype that weighs just 1,300 lbs but packs more than 330 horsepower from an efficient diesel engine. How efficient? The company claims fuel economy well above the 80 mpg mark. Color us skeptical. If you're more of the optimistic persuasion, Sondergard is looking for an investor willing to drop $7 million to fund the Lotus Seven/Donkervoort-like project, though it will also consider a number of smaller backers with the need to pony up $500,000 each. For more information, check out the company's eBay auction listing.

"Sondergard Automotive looking for startup capital for lighweight [sic], low C02 roadster... on eBay?"

So... is "ligh_weight" lighter than "lightweight"?

Looks awesome. Hope things work out for them.

I reported the fraudulent listing to eBay - my good deed of the day.

I like the look in front, but the back... it needs work.

As for the fundraising, if Sondergard wants to get innovative why not jump on kickstarter.com or something similar? No, they won't actually get the sums they're looking for, but it'd be more honest (as Picklefork mentioned above, the eBay Motors listing is technically fraudulent), would generate some publicity and could gauge broad support.

figures someone with such poor taste would not have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of

Gee, I would like to help, but I gave it all to Musk who sent me a nice coffee mug.

Sounds suspiciously like the deal that PBS gives you.

"If you donate $150 today, you get this nice tote bag!"

At least PBS gives us Nova and The Red Green Show.

Crash testing costs what? $20 million? There is no hope for a small startup car company in this country unless you are a billionaire funding your own project. $7 Million gets you no where unless you sell it as a kit car or put 3 wheels on it instead of 4

I dig it too. Hope they get their money.

Kind would prefer it without the aggressive scoops/vents, but not a big deal.

Seriously. I absolutely love the looks/formula of this thing.

I'm pretty sure that soliciting funds that way is illegal. For fundraising over a certain amount you can only approach "qualified investors" that have a net worth greater than X. (I don't remember how much.) It has to be run through the SEC.

Don't get me wrong. I completely support any who wants to start a car company and I would love a car with those specs. I just know that myself and a few others were looking at this very path as an option and came across legal hurdles...

Does anyone know what wheels this car has?

The VW Polo Bluemotion in Europe got over 70 mpg with a 3 cylinder turbo diesel and it isn't anywhere near this light.
