Spy Shots: Maybach gets a nose job...sorta
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again .As if it knows already that slapping the Zeppelin name on its slow-selling flagship limo wouldn't do the trick, Daimler is back at it with a very mild facelift to its Maybach line. It's so mild, in fact, that the test mule was able to circulate undisguised, as we really had to compare side by side to see what had been changed. But if you squint your eyes and tilt your head just so, you can see that the Maybach in the spy shots has a slightly different bumper and grille, and is said to be carrying LED headlamps, with similar mods to the rear. Maybach may be giving the interior a slight refresh, too, but they can't expect the almost indiscernible facelift to help it gain any territory on arch-rival Rolls-Royce and Bentley, can they?

Still not very attractive. Are people still buying these things? It seems like there would be better ways to spend almost half a million bucks, even if you have millions to spend.

Maybachs are purchased mostly by rappers or ball players but in the regular world, they find use as limousines. These are cars you are meant to "be driven in" not to drive.
If you had millions and didn't feel like driving, you go out and get one of these plus a chauffer.
The 62 is designed as a Limo.
The 57 is designed as a personal car but its still huge.
the best choice if you want a great luxury car and have endless cash flow, is the S600 Benz.

Ya. That was my point. I would rather be driven in a S60, or Phantom.

I'm glad he didn't say S550... :P

My wife's fellow Doctor at her dental practice has a 57S in blue. It really is quite stunning without giving you all the undesired attention as driving a RR Phantom

Mercedes has made three big mistakes the last 10 years.
1-buying Chrysler for 18.9 billion and selling it for 6.7 billion
2-building the SLR Mclaren for 400 grand with an overboosted archaic 3 valve SOHC 5.4 V8 that started life as a 3.5V6, 4.3V8 and 5.0V8. It made 600 hp and 517torque
But then rightaway offering a beautiful serene quiet powerful and luzurious SL65 for half the price and V12 and 604hp and 738 torque
3-Building the Maybach with a 5.5 V12 and 550hp for 300 grand then offering the S65 with 6.0 V12 and 604hp and 738 torque for half the price. Then in the second year upping the maybach power to the same V12 engine as S65 but increasing the price by 50 grand!
Mercedes undercut it self on both cars and wonders why when people come to its showrooms and see an S65 parked next to a Maybach 57 they choose the S65 instead.

Word.

Perhaps the next Maybach should try to capture the styling of the 300SEL from back in the day. Would give it some more panache without being downright gaudy.

The Maybach is plain. It is the Ford Five Hundred of the uber sedan crowd. Until Mercedes admits this, and completely redesigns the thing, as Ford is finally doing with the 2010 Taurus, it will remain an also-ran, no matter how good the mechanicals.

In terms of its looks, this car is the worst vehicle that has ever came out from the MB design shop. While any other MB car screams class and luxury, this one looks like a bland kit car.
Design a new Maybach, and do it not in Japan (were there ever any decent designs coming from Japan?), but in Germany.

Maybach's an archrival of RR and Bentley the way that I'm an archrival to Phil Mickelson on the links.
