Over in the UK, drivers buying a new Passat CC now have a new transmission option that gives them an extra 1.2 mpg. The 160 hp 1.8L TSI four cylinder can now be paired with VW's 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox in place of the 6-speed manual. The DSG yields a combined 32.2 mpg (U.S.) compared to the 31.0 mpg (U.S.) with the manual. Similarly, the CO2 emissions have dropped from 178 g/km to 172 g/km. The 2.0L TDI diesel and gasoline 3.6L V6 are available with the 6-speed DSG, in addition to the manual and conventional automatic transmissions.

Here in the U.S., no DSG transmissions are available in the CC, and neither are the diesel or 1.8L engines. The 2.0L TSI is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic while the V6 can only be ordered with the automatic.

News Release

30 January 2009

Volkswagen's four-door, four-seat coupé, the Passat CC, is now available to order with a seven-speed DSG gearbox which enhances performance and economy.

The compact and lightweight seven-speed DSG transmission, fitted with a pair of dry clutches, offers a number of benefits over a conventional automatic gearbox. A lower first gear ratio improves acceleration from a standstill to 62 mph to 8.5 seconds (8.6 manual) while the seventh gear has been raised to act as an overdrive function. This, in turn, gives an improved fuel consumption figure on the combined cycle of 38.7 mpg (37.2 manual) and CO2 emissions are reduced to 172 g/km (178 manual).

Available only in standard CC trim, and with the 1.8-litre TSI 160 PS engine, the Passat CC with seven-speed DSG gearbox features an extensive list of standard equipment including 17-inch 'Phoenix' alloy wheels, 2Zone Climatronic air conditioning, touchscreen stereo system with six-disc CD autochanger, driver's six-way electrically adjustable seat, multi-function leather steering wheel, six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP).

Further innovative systems available as an option on the Passat CC include Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) which allows the driver to select from comfort, sport and normal modes to define the desired suspension and steering settings for any particular journey, and Park Assist which makes light work of parallel parking manoeuvres.

Prices for the Passat CC start at £20,622 (RRP on the road) for the 1.8-litre TSI 160 PS, while the new DSG gearbox commands a £1,243 premium. Prices for the range rise to £30,492 for the GT 3.6-litre V6 which produces 300 PS.

Those are some pretty pathetic CO2 emissions numbers from a 4 cylinder turbo.

The 2.0L CC gets 31mpg 'highway', yet (in the article) the 1.8L can get a 'combined' 32mpg? Then it's getting near 40mpg on the highway with only a .2L different? Unless the 'combined' was used incorrectly...

"The 2.0L TDI diesel and gasoline 3.6L V6 are available with the 6-speed DSG, in addition to the manual and conventional automatic transmissions."

Neither the 2.0 TDI nor the European 3.6 V6 FSI are available with a conventional automatic transmission. The V6 is DSG-only, the TDI is 6-speed manual or 6-speed wet-clutch DSG.
