Click above for our high-res ZR-1 burnout gallery

Back at the Nürburgring, the hot Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 has just ripped four seconds off its claimed 7:26 lap. The new time, with Jan Magnussen at the wheel, is a claimed 7:22.4 for the full 12.93-mile loop. While the number is pretty bloody fast, it is still .3 seconds off the time earned by the Dodge Viper ACR (ouch, those three tenths really have to hurt!). We take these lap times with a grain of salt, as we've yet to see everyone on the 73-turn course under the same conditions, and with officially certified timing equipment. Again, so you don't have to Google the competition's best-claimed Ring times yourself, here they are: Porsche GT2 - 7:32, Nissan GT-R - 7:29, Corvette ZR1 - 7:22.4 and the Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22.1. Thanks for the tip, Xeyad!

They need to throw a F1 car in there for some fun perspectives. Only thing I found on google was in 2001 BMW tried and only did 8:34?! wth. I want to see sub 6 minute times!! And what happened to the Caparo T1?
Thats pretty fast at 6:11 and thats 1983. I would imagine with today's new race tech sub 6 would be a breeze.

On topic: Hell yeah the ZR1 is amazing, absolute beast!

        @ Dondonel

I know dude... he asked about race car lap times. That one happens to be the world record.

But then again, Porsche guys can't drive, so who cares... right?

        6:11.13 - Porsche 956 - Stefan Bellof - 28 May 1983

        Fast enough???

      Take that!

Take into consideration the Viper did the time with only 4 hot laps and 2 prior warm-up laps. Total! The ZR-1 has had a multitude of laps having opportunity to find the absolute perfect lap. also note that of the 4 hot laps 3 surpassed the previous ZR-1 record. And the driver had never driven an ACR before. Viper yes, but not the 2008 or ACR.

As for the tires the ZR-1 are a special low load tire made specifically for the ZR-1. Not your standard run of the mill run flat. Add to it the frequency the ACR driver hit the rev limiter and 2 missed shifts and the ACR would improve significantly with more track time. But, alas it is not necessary as the ZR-1 could not better it s time. No matter how many laps or how expert the driver was.

Too bad GM is about to go bankrupt if they don't get help form the government.... Maybe they should think about making money rather than trying to post a fast ring time.

      Just a thought.
Well, I was just at the local Chevrolet dealership looking at a Z06 to replace my STI, and according to the salesman down there they're selling ZR-1s at $165k. And apparently they'd sold two of them at that price in four days.

Somehow I don't think that not building the ZR-1 would have done a damn thing to GM's financial situation.

Just a thought....these cars are most likely going to be sold out (if they aren't already), so in my mind there worth the investment. Obviously its not pure profit but it does bring in some and thats enough to warrant it existence.

Plus the Vettes got there update pushed back so GM has to work and make there current model as fresh as they can. A lot less expensive to redevelop than to start fresh.

GM makes a fine product now...people just have to gain faith in them again and the car market
        • 6 Years Ago
The fact is that GM is in real trouble and putting any kind of resource into a 1 off kinda car still take the attention away from GM and their problems.

There was also a story about GM halting production of the Vette until a undetermined date.... To be honest, if GM makes 50k of these cars and sells them at that kind of price, GM does not see that money only the dealership makes the majority of that markup.

Even making 100M from the car sales (which i doubt with the total investment into the development), that's chump change to a major manufacture like GM.
