It's coming... Subaru counting down the days

Subaru is getting hyped up about the unveiling of something at the New York Auto Show. It doesn't take any amount of automotive detective work to figure out that the "legend" to be "reborn" in the Big Apple is the new Impreza, but unfortunately, their little site doesn't give up any more information, nor does it say that the event will be webcast. Still, you can sign up for email and mobile alerts, or just wait for our extensive coverage coming up next month.
In the meantime...

Yea im thinking exactly the same thing because "a legend being reborn" sounds to me that they're bringing back something from Subaru's past (ie SVX).

What else in Subaru's history is legendary?
SVX, BRAT, GL Wagon?
Unless it's some 70's microcar we only see in GranTurismo.

Turbo-Parallel Hybrid (TPH) Justy? Just sayin... It could be? Nah, really hoping for an SVX to compete with the new A5/ S5.
SVX - FTW!

Do you guys actually remember the SVX?
It was underpowered compared to rivals of its era like the 3000GT VR4, 300ZX, Supra, and RX-7 eventhough it cost almost as much.
Even worse IT WAS AUTOMATIC ONLY!!!
Yes, I'm hoping Subaru says FTW and brings out a 2 door coupe/fastback sports car based on the WRX STi platform but don't call it the SVX. The SVX was garbage. Call it the XT...at least that car was a 2 door turbo and it had a manual tranny.
Subaru Bring Back the XT FTW!!!

Calling the Impreza a legend is seriously lowering the standards for being a legend. I'm glad Subaru isn't in charge of the football Hall of Fame or else Bubby Brister would be going in. LOL
Come on Subaru, please tell us it's something more exciting than rebranding a frumpy little sedan.

Hey zigzagz94,
Which XT are you referring to? It's not the 1985-1991 XT is it?

Do you have any links to the XT FTW?

New WRX - without Doubt.
I only wish it were an SVX replacement - like the B11s they showed a couple of years ago. Man, I would be so happy!
BTW, the SVX was not underpowered in its day. It was a better car in terms of build and engineering than the Lexus SC300 and far more beautiful. It wasn't in the same class as the mistu 3000, it was far more of a Grand Tourer like the Lexus. Unfortunately, you can sell a high-end Subaru about as easily as you can sell a high-end Toyota. Subaru should have launched the SVX as it's own brand and upgraded a Legacy to luxo levels as accompaniment...as did Toyota and Nissan w/ Lex and Infinity.

Sorry Ruggels, check urban dictionary: FTW can mean "F*CK THE WORLD." Now that's a cool car moniker!
Re-read it now, "The XT FTW!!!"

Ha ha. The Impreza a legend? If you mean WRX or STI, then yes, but not the base level econobox.

svx was one of the most advanced cars of its time. Among other things, it had drag coefficient that few modern cars can achieve. Calling it garbage clearly shows your lack of knowledge about it.

Man, it does sound alot like the SVX is returning.
If it is, I was right to figure it would be back with the way sports cars have been coming back like a vengence since 2003.
Back in the early 90s, the sporty car era was being rapidly overrun by the SUV craze and not only Subaru was affected by sales drops.
Subaru killed the SVX in the 97 model year, but was selling the crap out of the Outback and Outback Sport.
Now, with all the new "retro" and super sporty 300+ HP engines in many manufacturers cars and Subaru not being an exception, its a great time to be a Awd sports car.
The loss of the standard Legacy lineup and the Baja could mean Subaru wants to introduce an "adjusted" group of cars that will appeal to a wider group of people.
I really dont think subaru will rehash the "Justy" name (although we may be suprised) will return, but a new smaller lower cost alternative to the Impreza just may.
I dont think the Impreza is "cheap" by any means starting at mid 16k.
I think a flagship sport coupe such as the SVX is a real possiblity.
Was a neat car thats for sure.
Way ahead of its time, but a both a bit spendy (in the day) and maybe alittle heavy, but a cool layout and very futuristic look.
Gotta love Guigario.

Apparently YOU don't know your Subaru history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_XT
The XT/XT6/Alcyone was the car the SVX replaced. The XT had a drag coefficent of 0.29 just like your beloved SVX. I called the SVX garbage because it was a much heavier, AUTO ONLY tranny, grand tourer that cost $37,000 in 1997. The SVX was never a true sports car in the same vein as the 300zx, Supra, Rx-7, etc. A good near luxury sports coupe yes, but not a true performance machine that should be sought after by enthusiasts.
The XT Turbo on the other hand was a more pure sports car that had revolutionary features:
"The inside of the car had many aircraft-like features such as pod mounted lighting, heater/ac and wiper controls. The standard tilting-telescoping steering moved the instrument panel to keep it lined up with the steeing column when tilting. The shifter was "joystick" shaped and had a thumb trigger interlock and "on-demand" 4WD engage button. Turbo models featured a sort of "artificial horizon" orange backlit LCD instrument display with the tachometer, boost indicator, temperature and fuel gauges seen as 3D graphs tilting back out to the horizon. The XT was loaded with features rarely found on small cars, such as a turbocharger, a computer-controlled engine and transmission, adjustable height suspension...."
Granted the 136hp engine doesn't sound impressive by today's standards but in the mid 80's when it was coupled to the 5-speed MANUAL TRANSMISSION, the XT Turbo was fairly quick for its day. The car was also pretty much bullet proof as opposed to the suspect reliability of the SVX.
If Subaru is going to debut a flagship sports coupe, I would hope that the car is a more raw performance machine in the vien of the XT Turbo and not some hopped up grand tourer like the SVX.

I think subaru is doing this right, just ripping of the bandaid unlike mitsubishi which is really REALLY slowly pulling it off. No one will even care when the lancer comes out.
