Teknikens Värld just put up two photos of what appears to be the next-generation Volvo V70 wagon. The car looks a lot like the recently shown S80, rather than the S60 that usually matches the V70 in the midsize slot at Volvo. And with the V50 creeping up towards the midsize range, does this mean Volvo might be consolidating the lineup? On the Teknikens Värld homepage, there are also spy photos of another, heavily-draped V70 running at a track that seem to support the size and shape of this undisguised wagon.[Source: Teknikens Varld]

Those are some big taillights.

pretty similar... Volvo's are ageless...

The current V70 is unusual in that it's a separate model between the S60 and the old S80 in size. It makes more sense that it be simply a different body style of the same car (like the S40/V50), but the S60 is too small a basis for a family wagon. So instead, the new V70 will be the wagon version of the S80 sedan.
I wouldn't read much more into it. Volvo needs both midsize and smaller vehicles to meet its goals, IMO. The trend among its competitors is expansion of the model lineup to occupy all the niches, and I expect Volvo to do the same.

I don't care what anyone says; wagons are the sex, and this is the king of wagons.

While Volvos dont break any records in the styling department (just my opinion), I think they are the best looking cars out there. Just something about their simplicity makes me smile...

Wow a wagon..... woopie. Show me a sedan and then we can talk.

On Teknikens Världs homepage they're talking about this new v70 (if it won't be a v90?) getting a turbocharged v8 with 370 hp!
the interior and the engines (except for a ethanol 2.0) is supposed to be exactly the same as on the s80.

I hope Volvo V70 will bw different from S80 and S60 in shape. I wish it will be quite better than these.

I hope that the new V70 is a bit wider, roomier. It looks like I expected pretty much. Volvo doesn't want to mess with its consistent styling.
Who cares about sedans? They are so last century. Once you have a wagon, you never go back. A sedan is a waste of space. Try to bring home in a sedan what you can fit in a wagon from Costco, Ikea, Home Depot. It's not a truck, but then it gets 28 mpg too, with a range of over 400 miles thanks to its 18 gallon tank.
I had my wagon in for service and was given a S60 as a demo. Nice car, but no hope of getting my hockey bag in the trunk, so I tossed it on the leather seats in the back.
No wonder wagons/estates/combis are so popular elsewhere - no size penalty and maximized space.
I wish there were other wagon options, like an Impala SS wagon. The Magnum is OK, but you can't see out of it and too much is traded for styling looks (does look good though). I like the Freestyle (style-free) but not the mushy CVT (100%) or I just might look at one. But it gets about 18 mpg!
There is a nice Honda wagon that could be an Acura over here, and Nissan makes a RWD wagon in Japan that could be an Infiniti, too.
But I still like Volvos - 184,000 miles on my 850 wagon and it's been very reliable. Seats are ultra comfortable too.

It's got Pontiac Transport tail lights.

Those taillights made me jump! The whole rear end is a mess!

It this all you could come up with so you could post your crappy link? The V70 is the S60 wagon, so why would it be different. You should wait before you know something before posting.
#11 - similar comment. I am glad you find an opportunity to advertise your link, but Volvo wagons have used these lights since the 850 wagon of the mid 90s. Sorry.

#4, I Totally agree with you, Wagons are very sexy. And the other poster is correct, once you own a wagon, you don't go back.
And I know many of you don't like the rear end, but I like it. Volvo has always been on their own path, and unique. This rear ends speaks the Volvo philosophy, Safety, Visibilty(both out from the passenger, and visible to other drivers..if you don't see those brake lights come on, you're blind), etc.
Lastly, Thank God Ford has allowed Volvo to remain in control of their design and vision! Vovlo's are still the unique and timeless designs today as they were before the aquisition. The same can't be said for Saab and GM, the current 9-3 is an sad vehicle.

nicely done, now when do we see the re-design on the SUV's?

Why get a sedan when a wagon version is available? More cargo capacity, better visibility, and more oversteer to boot. I'm always frustrated when there *isn't* a wagon variant available.
Sanfam @ Oct 11th 2006 1:37PM
Was I glad to see the wagon support in this thread...
I'm a proud owner of several wagons, and was successful in convincing my roommate to acquire a WRX Wagon. He has never once regretted the decision, as the cargo capacity has so often been called into service.
My own collection consists of no less than three 740 wagons, with the possibility of an 850 or a Buick Roadmaster wagon entering service in the near future. People always ask why I choose them over the sedans, and I always respond..."Why not?" What do I gain by getting a sedan? I lose valuable cargo space, I gain a trivial handling benefit (one that isn't shared by all cars, either...sometimes a wagon is just as good). The wagon also brings superior aerodynamic characteristics and improved visibility (generally...some modern wagons have fairly large C- and D-pillars, making rearward visibility as bad or worse than their four-doored siblings), and a rear wiper. Yes, the rear wiper, my one true friend in the salt belt.

good looking wagons & cars. If you are over 5'2" how do you get behind the wheel? I went to test drive one, and it took too long to get in the drivers side. I couldn't go through that 5 times a day.

Where the curent (pre-2008) V70 design impelled me to buy a model so new it hadn't yet been shaken out, this design will never make it into my garage. Any who say it is no different and merely evolutional need to have his/her eyes examined. This new car results from the efforts of a new design team. What a disappointment. The one pic I have seen of the new interior is equally regressive in terms of aesthetic appeal. Strangely, a co-worker returned today from GM hq and said a possible new Cadillac estate (!) for 2008 is outstanding...hmmm..but Volvo--such a shame.
