At the Geneva Motor Show this year, Volkswagen will introduce one of its most enticing takes on the Golf yet: a Variant/SportWagon with the go-fast components from its GTD diesel hot hatch. Shame we're never likely to see it here.
There is some bad news for hot hatch fans who also love efficiency. The chances of the Volkswagen Golf GTD coming to the US are increasingly slim, according to an interview with Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn in Automotive News. Horn says that the model would cost too much to import from Germany. Cue the sad trombone.
The flurry of Mk VII Golf GTD television ads by Volkswagen, which range from funny to hilarious, just make us want one that much more. The focus of these 30-second commercials is on the torque-rich performance of the hatchback's turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine, which has a stump-thumping 280 pound-feet of torque on hand. That's enough torque for some harmless mischief, if you're to believe the commercials, and, paired with 184 horsepower, enough for the oil-burning Golf performance mode
