2022 BMW X6
The BMW X6 is a full-size luxury crossover SUV with an adventuresome fastback roofline to distinguish it from the more traditional X5. You'd never guess it's an SUV from looking at it?and it doesn't feel like one inside, as the roofline nibbles away at rear head room and cargo space. For 2022 every model gets standard all-wheel drive, which BMW calls xDrive.
The base engine in the xDrive 40i is a potent twin-turbo inline-6, with two faster models, M50i and M, using twin-turbo V-8s. There's also an M Competition that's ready for track days with a stiffer suspension and other performance enhancements.
Despite being heavy, the X6 handles well, while the ride is predictably firm and well-controlled. It gets around corners using muscle, not agility.
The EPA rates its gas mileage at 21 mpg city, 25 highway, 23 combined. The M50i with its V-8 gets 16/22/18 mpg, while Competition delivers 13/18/15 mpg.
The X6 hasn't been crash tested, but the X5 with the same structure got high scores. Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors and adaptive LED headlights. Options include adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist, and a surround-view camera system. It's needed because the rearward vision through the sloping rear window is poor.
