Excelent powertrains, from the new 2.7-liter turbo four up to the 6.2-liter V8. The Silverado is plenty capable, too, with a big bed and plenty of payload and towing. The interior just can't match the competition, especially on upper trim models.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado keeps rolling along for GM, racking up big sales numbers, but it’s not the most desirable American pickup in our books. That prize belongs to the Ram 1500, but the Silverado can still make a strong case for itself as the right pickup for you. What it lacks in cabin design and polish, it makes up some in the powertrain department. The variety of engines Chevy makes available to truck buyers is excellent, offering everything from a high-tech turbocharged four-cylinder to the burly 6.2-liter V8. Chevy also gives buyers a wide range of exterior design options, as different trim levels come with totally different styling. Subtle levels of variation are common among other trucks, but none provide the wide range of looks that the Silverado does.

The Silverado was completely redesigned last year, and although changes are few for 2020, we do see a dramatic increase in engine availability. The 6.2-liter V8 trickles down the lineup and is now offered on the Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trim levels. On the other end of the cylinder count, the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder can now be had on the Custom trim level as an option (it's standard on the LT and RST). The 5.3-liter V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management can now be paired with the 10-speed automatic previously reserved for the 6.2. It's standard on the LT Trail Boss and optional on the High Country. All other versions of the 5.3-liter with DFM stick with the eight-speed auto. Finally, the Duramax diesel engine arrives on the scene, boasting impressive torque and refinement.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is available in regular cab, (extended) Double Cab and Crew Cab styles as well as three bed lengths and two front seating options. There are then eight trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country. There are seven different combinations of engines and transmissions among all the trim levels. The 4.3-liter V6 (285 horsepower / 305 pound-feet of torque) is exclusively paired to a six-speed automatic, whereas the 5.3-liter V8 (355 hp / 383 lb-ft) can be paired to either the six-speed, eight-speed or 10-speed automatic transmissions depending on the configuration. If you opt for the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (310 hp / 348 lb-ft of torque), it’s going to be paired with an eight-speed automatic. Chevy’s 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp and 460 lb-ft) is mated to the 10-speed automatic only, as is the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six (277 hp and 460 lb-ft).
