Is Forza for you?

I love car games. The more realistic the better. And that's why I've bought every generation of Gran Turismo from Sony. However, that little company called Microsoft (just a few miles from where I'm sitting) seems to be making a push to dethrone the king of car simulations. Forza Motorsport is getting rave reviews, especially for online play which is lacking in GT4. Our sister (or brother) site Joystiq has the low down on the lo

Nissan wans to catch up in the hybrid game with Altimas

Clearly behind in the race to sell hybrid vehicles, Nissan will begin selling hybrid Altimas in 2006. They will license the technology from Toyota and hope to sell 50,000 a year.  There's a reason for that sales number from Nissan — in order to help meet the US fuel standards for corporate fuel economy, they will need to sell 50,000. Like the hybrid Toyota Camry, Nissan will build the hybrid Altima in the US with parts exported from Japan. Currently, AutoWeek believes they will

Loeb takes the podium in Rally of Turkey

Sebastien Loeb, the reigning World Rally Champion, drove his Citroen to this fourth consecutive win at the Rally of Turkey. Subaru's Petter Solberg took second after making some bad choices with his tires. Loeb won by almost a minute over Solberg. His win now ties him for the most consecutive rally victories with the 1985 champion Timo Salonen. In the driver's standings, Loeb is still ahead with 55 points, with Solberg at 42. Loeb's victories, however, are not enough to put Citroen at the

Crash test round-up: Maxima, Verona, A4, Malibu and S60

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested several 2005 sedans in side impact tests. In a nutshell, the Audi A4 and Chevy Malibu scored "Good" — the highest rating, Volvo S60 got the runner-up "Acceptable" and the Nissan Maxima and Suzuki Verona received "Marginal" ratings. The Audi received the "Double Best Pick" rating for also doing well in the frontal crash test. I was a little surprised to see that Volvo said it was "pleased" with its rating after being such an innovator

Hummer hits girl, helmet saves life

Here's a case of a helmet possibly saving a child's life. A 9-year-old girl in Anchorage, Alaska rode into an intersection and was struck by a Hummer who pulled out from a stop sign. The child injured her arm, but escaped serious injury. In this case, the driver was following proper care, but was still unable to see a 9-year-old girl on a bike. Could this accident have been avoided with a smaller SUV? Just how good is the visibility in a Hummer H2? Should helmets be mandatory in every sta

Governator wants less emissions

Yup. The Republican Governor of California, who owns several large SUVS, wants to continue tightening the tailpipe emissions on cars. Auto manufacturers and dealers, who strongly supported his election, are up-in-arms over the Governator's policies. Automakers have said the only way to meet the proposed emission standards is to build smaller cars. Gov. Schwarzenegger didn't offer specifics, but indicated he wants emissions to drop to year 2000 levels by 2010 and to 1990 levels by 2020, an

China fast climbing the charts on the automotive recordbooks

According to a lengthy breakdown of the Chinese car trends in the Economist, China is currently the third-largest country for cars and boasts the most highway miles outside of the US. It's amazing hunger for cars is projected to grow to 10-20% every year for several years, making it potentially a rival market in size to the US. The Economist credits a centralized economic strategy for guiding investments and building huge amounts of infrastructure such as factories, roads and a new F1 rac

It's official, dealers told to brace for smaller Buick, Pontiac and GMC line-ups

GM announced officially to its dealers on Thursday that they should expect to see even more consolidation of its GMC, Buick and Pontiac dealerships. Dealers don't seems to mind the new strategy as they expect to benefit from a stronger GM, but are waiting to see what the future holds for them. GM is expected to boost Chevy's portfolio possibly up to 26 models and Cadillac to 11, making them the backbone of GM's recovery strategy. Buick will be pared down to 4 or 5 models, but GM was still

Ford says to dump your tires after 6 years

The car maker and tire makers are disputing each others' claims about tire life expectancy. Ford, who got a black eye through the Explorer rollover problems (and may get another one due to roof strength) is urging customers to toss tires with plenty of tread life if the tires are older than 6 years. Ironically, the tire companies say otherwise. You'd figure someone in the sales department would say "Hey, that'd sell more tires!" But they insist that 10-year-old tires are just as good as n

Skoda Yeti may go into production as Roomster

Sure, we'll never see it in the US, but other parts of this planet may be seeing the Czech auto maker Skoda's Yeti concept SUV as the Roomster, an affordable small SUV to challenge the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucsan, sometime next year. The Yeti was unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show and, oddly enough, sported a single passenger-side door. That quirk will not make it into production, but expect the practical things, such as a plastic floor for easy washing and a rear fold-down

Don't call the A3 a hatch

According to Audi, it's a sport wagon. AutoWeek tracks down a lot of people for this article to show that selling an expensive hatchback is a struggle. The latest numbers prove the point. Audi's point is that it's reaching out to a younger audience to match its brand image in Europe. They're only hoping to sell 9,000 in its first full year. What puzzles me is that they released the car without a Quattro all-wheel drive version which is a huge part of Audi's brand and lure.

British car maker Bristol adds more and more power to its Fighter

The rarely seen Bristol is adding an "S" package, an "R" package and a "C" package to its 525hp Fighter coupe. "S" is for an additional 103 to 125hp, depending on aerodynamics. "R" is for lowered suspension and wider tires. "C" is for competition, where you can get an exposed alloy fuel filler and better aerodynamics. How much will such British exclusivity (with an all-aluminum Chrysler V10) cost you? It starts at $357,000.

Cobalt gets low crash test rating

GM's newest economy offering, the Chevy Cobalt, received two stars out of five in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's side crash test for the driver. When the Cobalt was tested for a frontal crash, it received five stars for the passenger and four for the driver. The Cobalt offers side curtain airbags as an option, but this test represented one without the side airbag. NHTSA tes
