Electrification is nothing new for Mercedes-AMG. A few years ago, back when the gullwinged SLS was still the company's flagship sports coupe, AMG was an early adopter of electrification for performance cars. The SLS Electric Drive was a 740-horsepower all-wheel-drive hammer with a price tag as eye-watering as its paint colors. The SLS Electric Drive was a niche product, but it's unlikely to be the last of its kind. In an interview at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, AMG boss Tobias Möers said another all-electric product is likely in the cards.
"Why should we ignore it?" Möers said. The market is significantly different than it was six years ago when the SLS Electric Drive was introduced. Möers described the SLS as "a very specific car," though he was proud to say that it's still the record holder on the Nürburgring. The demand for hybrids and full EVs has grown exponentially, meaning a fully-electric sports car — especially one designed and built by AMG — should be much more appealing to consumers. The associated costs of building EVs have gone down significantly, too. The electric SLS was more than $500,000 when it was introduced.
