In the days following the release of The Fate of the Furious, the movie picked up millions of dollars - and millions of pirates. According to Variety, the film was downloaded 2.1 million times in the week following the debut. Interestingly, it still wasn't as popular as Furious 7 among the illegal-downloading set.

That previous film was illegally downloaded a whopping 4.74 million times in the same time frame, according to the news outlet. This difference in demand was also reflected in opening-weekend box office sales in the US. The Fate of the Furious brought in $100.2 million, whereas Furious 7 managed to rake in $147.2 million.

Despite the high number of illegal copies distributed, The Fate of the Furious has still been an enormous financial success. Variety reports it earned $532.5 million worldwide in the opening weekend, which broke the old record of $529 million held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
