2017 Dodge Model Year Preview and Updates

With what Dodge marketing describes as 'the purification of the brand and consolidation with SRT', Dodge has firmly returned to its performance roots. Few platforms can speak to those roots as convincingly as the CHALLENGER, now available in both T/A and T/A 392 variants, featuring 5.7 liter and 6.4 liter Hemi powertrains, respectively. Also notice the Challenger GT, combining American muscle with all-wheel drive. Beyond that, look for new colors, graphics and wheels, along with an 'Active' exhaust on all 5.7 liter Hemis, and the fourth-generation Uconnect on all Challengers.

CHARGER: Sharing what is essentially the same platform and drivetrains with the Challenger two door, the Charger continues to serve as the four-door 'family' answer to someone wanting a Challenger. The new model year brings a Daytona variant with either a 5.7 or 6.4 liter Hemi, along with the new colors, graphics, wheels, Active exhaust and fourth-generation Uconnect, all seen on the Challenger.

DART: For the 2016 model year Dodge simplified the Dart lineup – SXT Sport, Turbo and GT Sport. With entry-level value and, within the Turbo and GT Sport, something for the sedan enthusiast, we had hoped the Dart would have entered the 2017 with some market momentum. Instead, Dodge simplifies the Dart lineup even further; it's discontinued.

VIPER: In the 25th anniversary of Viper production, Dodge's supercar goes out (production will cease after the 2017 model year) with the appropriate bang, offering six serialized special editions: 1:28 Edition ACR, GTS-R Commemorative Editon ACR, Snakeskin Edition GTC, Snakeskin Edition ACR, VoooDoo II Editon ACR and Viper Dodge Dealer Editon ACR. For those wishing that some fifty years ago you might have purchased a '66 Cobra, this is your moment.

DURANGO: What Dodge describes as a 'drivers' SUV' is the new-for-'17 Durango GT, which replaces the 'Limited' as Dodge's volume model. Beyond the GT, it's a slate of newish options, tweaked packages and the same (available) Hemi power for this value-driven RWD/AWD SUV.

GRAND CARAVAN: As Chrysler's Pacifica accelerates into the future, Dodge's Grand Caravan holds tightly to the past; this, kids, is your mother's minivan. But for those wanting to maximize capacity while minimizing cost, it's easily found in one of the Grand Caravan's four trim levels, beginning with the Grand Caravan SE at just under $25K. With V6 power and room for seven there are few things more versatile for a young family with a bunch of kids – or empty nesters with a penchant for stuff.

JOURNEY: The Journey GT replaces the R/T as Dodge's top-level model. Despite its age the Journey continues as a value-driven three-row crossover, that value heightened by an available V6 and all-wheel drive. Despite the all-wheel drive, the cosmetic mods to make the Journey appear more all-road capable are cosmetic; the Journey is more comfortable at the mall than Moab.
