Mercedes-AMG C63 R coupe wings it on the 'Ring

Let's be honest, when BMW introduced the M4 GTS, the steely-eyed motor men in Affalterbach started drawing up improvements for the standard AMG C63S coupe. Here's what they came up with.

Expected to be called the AMG C63 R – like the new AMG GT R – it takes the position of Mercedes' old Black Series range. Oh, and it looks ridiculously quick. Seen lapping the Nürburgring at break-neck pace in this video, the hardcore C63 coupe's most distinctive feature is a huge rear wing that looks like it used to belong to a GT R.

The wing sits atop a rather strange styling decision – a gloss-black trunk lid. If Mercedes grabbed a part to attach the lid to, why go to the effort of painting it? No, the glossy look has us thinking Mercedes will use carbon fiber, in a bid to cut weight. Still, it seems strange, almost slapdash, for Mercedes to only apply CF to the trunk lid. What about the hood or the roof? And if there is more carbon fiber on this car, why paint everything but the trunk? There are just a lot of questions here.

Under hood, expect a more powerful version of Mercedes' 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8. While we wouldn't count on the same 577-horsepower output as the AMG GT R – why push the C63's performance up to that level when neither BMW nor Lexus have cracked 500 hp and Audi isn't even in the segment anymore? – expect a hefty bump above the C63S' 503 ponies. Based on the noises in this video, it sounds like a freer-flowing exhaust is coming, too. It's still too early to safely predict when Mercedes will show the hotter C63 Coupe, but if we had to hazard a guess, the Geneva Motor Show is always a safe one.
