2016 Pikes Peak Hill Climb: Practice Day 4

View 85 Photos
It's been a long week here in Colorado Springs. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is a demanding for everyone involved, from the organizers to the race teams to the media covering the event. The sunrise practice sessions require a 3:00 am wake-up call each day, and afternoons are taken up with repairing and prepping cars, or, in our case, editing photos until our eyes our bloodshot. Much caffeine is required. Thankfully, there's a one-day gap between the last practice session and race day on Sunday, which will give everyone a few extra hours of much-needed sleep.

That said, it's also been a rewarding week. Each of the drivers and riders will have booked four solid days of practice runs on the course, and we've come away with hundreds of photos from what is undoubtedly the most scenic venue in motorsports.

With all of the qualifying runs complete, the running order has also been set for the 100th anniversary of the Race to the Clouds. Romain Dumas turned in the top time in qualifying and will therefore get a coveted early start time just behind the motorcycle and quad classes. That might not seem like a big deal, but for Dumas it surely will be. He barely lost out on the overall win in 2012 when inclement weather later in the day slowed his race, while Rhys Millen was able to complete the course on dry pavement. Dumas will need all the help he can get, as he qualified a mere two seconds ahead of Millen. Both will also have to watch out for the Acura NSX 4-Motor EV Concept driven by Tetsuya Yamano, who was less than seven seconds behind Millen.

For a complete list of qualifying times and the official run order head over to PPIHC.com, and you can view our photos from today's practice session in the gallery above. Also be sure to check back on Sunday for a race report and results.
