Watch Evo drive the ultra-rare Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo 400R

When it comes to the Nissan GT-R, we've always been R34 fans. Blame it on years of our childhoods spent running Gran Turismo 2 behind the wheel of Penzoil-branded, GT500-spec R34 GT-R models. Why the video game reference? That'd be because Evo has been driving another icon of the racing game: the R33-based Nismo 400R.

Sure, our 702-horsepower JGTC R34 was awesome, but if we're talking about road-going Skylines, the 400R was hard to beat. Inspired by the Le Mans-spec GT-R LM – which GT2 also offered in road-going form – the Nismo 400R ran on a bored-out 2.8-liter version of the venerable RB-series, twin-turbocharged straight six. A prodigious 395 horsepower and 347 pound-feet of torque were on tap from the race-derived engine.

And you can enjoy the results of that engine, along with all the Nismo-endowed goodness, in the latest video from Evo, where Jethro Bovingdon, still the owner of the best British name ever, takes a Midnight Purple version of the fired-up coupe for a ride. Check it out up top.
