VW teaser video hints at electric Microbus for CES

Rumors continue to swirl that Volkswagen's electric vehicle concept for CES might be a revival of the classic Microbus, and the company's latest teaser video supports that speculation.

This 10-second clip only provides brief glimpses of the exterior styling, but the cues suggest a return of the famous van. The video indicates that the windshield practically connects to the horizontal grille, and the front end appears mostly flat like the Microbus. A brief shot down the side hints at a smooth profile and short overhangs, which are important design elements of the original. We also get a good look at the back that features taillights that run upward to outline the rear glass.

VW remains vague about specific details about the EV concept, but it promises the model signals a move towards greater electric mobility and vehicle connectivity. Rumors suggest that brand chairman Dr. Herbert Diess could use the model to unveil cutting-edge flat batteries during his CES keynote on January 5 that might give the Microbus a range of over 300 miles.

This year's CES looks to be a major show for next-gen auto tech. Google and Ford could make a major announcement there about an autonomous vehicle partnership. Chevrolet might reveal the production Bolt, too.
