The on-again-off-again saga that is British sports car maker TVR's story was revived again when they sent out a first-look image of their new car. Problem is that it's not their image. TVR shared a rendering Tuesday of its sports car planned for 2018, powered by a new engine developed with Cosworth and built in a to-be-determined British factory, but that the image was basically a retouched version of a rendering created by Autocar magazine – something TVR later admitted.
In June, TVR's leadership announced it had teamed with Cosworth and Gordon Murray – the man behind the famed McLaren F1 – to create its first new car in more than a decade.
TVR announced the following month that the order books were open and those interested could place a £5,000 (about $7500) deposit for the first 100 of a car no one's seen and without technical specifications. Then in August, reports surfaced that the new TVR was already sold out.
To date, no specific performance targets or specifications have been revealed, but those who've put their pounds down have been assured a prototype engine has been started and tested, and the first cars could be tested on the road next year. The company also told Autocar the intended production deadline of 2017 had been pushed back a year, and that it had received more than twice the expected number of deposits.
As for distribution outside of the UK, a TVR rep told Autoblog over the summer that other European markets will be considered first, but that the company is aware of the interest among Americans for the new car.
