Authorities say he then stole another vehicle, shooting at pursuing officers as they followed him as he drove northbound onto Interstate 5 before exiting in the city's Ravenna neighborhood. Police say the suspect again fired at officers, who fatally wounded him. Several officers and other motorists were treated for non-life-threatening injuries caused by collisions during the incident, which is being reviewed by the department's Force Investigation Team.
"The suspect vehicle crashed into police cars, crashed into civilian cars," Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole told reporters at the scene. "Thankfully, no one else in the neighborhood was injured."
Police say up to 11 officers are believed to have exchanged gunfire with the man at two separate locations during the chase. Those officers will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
