Recharge Wrap-up: Using traffic to generate clean energy, Brazil raises ethanol blend to 27%

Industry Experts Urge Low-Carbon Fuel Standard Extension

Brazil is considering raising the ethanol content of its regular gasoline to 27 percent. The two-percent raise from the current 25-percent ethanol blend is expected to increase annual ethanol demand by some 2 billion liters (528.3 million gallons). The raise would be part of an agreement between the national government and the ethanol industry, which produces its product from Brazil's abundant sugar cane. Premium gasoline would remain a 25-percent ethanol blend, according to officials. Brazil increased the ethanol blend from 20 to 25 percent in 2012. Read more at The Rio Times.

Industry leaders are meeting in Sacramento for the Clean, Low-Carbon Fuels Summit to discuss future policy in California. Supporters feel that California's low-carbon fuel standard to achieve greenhouse gas and climate targets. California Air Resources Board chairman Mary Nichols says in a tweet, "Low-carbon fuels [are] crucial to achieving 2030 climate goals." Calstart President and CEO John Boesel and Advanced Biofuels Association president Michael McAdams urge California to extend the low-carbon fuel standard beyond its 2020 experiation date and to set higher goals for greenhouse gas reductions. The University of Illinois at Chicago and New Energy Innovations are partnering on traffic-powered energy. The Traffic Powered Renewable Energy System (TPRES) uses cylinders inside cartridges installed in the roadway, which compress air when cars drive over them. The compressed air is used to generate electricity, which can be stored during high traffic periods for use later when traffic is low. "The UIC Senior Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Design Teams were the missing link we have been looking for to continue this project and help finalize the best amount of energy production with our unit," says TPRES inventor Ralph A. Black. See how the TPRES works in the video, and read more in the press release below.

Collaboration between University of Illinois, Chicago and New Energy Innovations, Inc. Enhances the Development of New Clean Energy Source

Chicago, IL

The University of Illinois at Chicago Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has announced they have entered into an agreement with New Energy Innovations, Inc., to enhance the new traffic powered sustainable source of clean energy at intersections, municipalities, airport entrances, toll booths, as well as entrance and exit ramps nationwide.

Ralph A. Black, creator and inventor of the patented Traffic Powered Renewable Energy System (TPRESTM) Patent # 8,754,539, along with Chief Technical Officer and co-inventor, Asad Ali, have worked closely together on the design and effectiveness of this renewable energy system. The University of Illinois at Chicago Senior Mechanical Engineering and Design Team will be working on optimizing the best mechanical system.

"The UIC Senior Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Design Teams were the missing link we have been looking for to continue this project and help finalize the best amount of energy production with our unit. This provides us with the blueprint for optimum use of products in our final assembly. It is our desire to get the best energy production possible. We are confident that the UIC Senior Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Design Teams will fulfill that need," says Black.

"The University of Illinois is committed to all methods of green advancement and once completed, we see this clean energy project to be an excellent source for sustainable renewable energy in the future," says Dr. Michael A. Brown, Ph.D, PE of the University of Illinois.

"We remain interested and supportive of New Energy Innovations' unique clean renewable energy technology. The Village of Elmwood Park is committed to energy conservation and sustainable renewable energy. Many initiatives are underway in our community and the Traffic Powered Renewable Energy System shows the potential to be a viable contribution to these initiatives," says Angelo "Skip" Saviano, President of the Village in Elmwood Park, IL.

About New Energy Innovations:
New Energy Innovations is a privately held corporation owned by Ralph A. Black and business partner Joe Viverito, the company's Vice President. Their crowd funding efforts begin this spring with the intent to be manufacturing the TPRESTM for installation by summer at Classic Sheet Metal, Inc., a sheet metal fabrication and assembly company in Franklin Park, IL. Agreements are in place with WT Engineering in Hoffman Estates, IL to provide additional civil engineering expertise and surveys needed for installations to take place. Heading the project at WT Engineering is Keith Mandoske.
