Which American Cities Have The Best And Worst Accident Rates?

Allstate Insurance released its 10th annual "America's Best Drivers Report" this week. In reviewing millions of claims, and taking into account city density, population and weather, researchers compiled a comprehensive list of cities that hold the country's best and worst drivers.

For the fourth year in a row, Fort Collins, Colorado was named the best city in America. Drivers in Fort Collins average one crash every 14.2 years, and the growing city has ranked among Allstate's Top 10 best cities every year the study has been released. Motorists there are 29.6 percent less likely to be involved in a traffic accident compared to the national average.

Following Fort Collins among this year's safest cities: Brownsville, Texas; Boise, Idaho; Kansas City, Kansas; and Huntsville, Alabama.

The worst drivers in America, according to Allstate? Residents in Worcester, Massachusetts are involved in a collision, on average, once every 4.3 years. They're 143.9 percent more likely to be involved in an accident than the average U.S. driver. Boston isn't far behind its neighbor to the north. It's the most densely populated city in the Top 5, and motorists there average are involved in a collision on average once every 4.4 years. Washington D.C. follows behind Boston. Motorists in the nation's capitol crash, on average 5.1 years.

What do the bottom-ranking cities have in common? The worst five are all older cities on the East Coast. But the frequency of crashes doesn't necessarily correlate with danger. On the contrary, drivers in Massachusetts and Washington D.C. are the least likely to die in a traffic accident, according to a study published last month by a researcher at the University of Michigan.

Drivers in Washington D.C. had a fatality rate of 2.37 deaths per 100,000 people, the safest rate in the nation. Massachusetts drivers had the second-lowest chance of dying in a traffic accident, with 5.25 deaths per 100,000 people. The national average was 10.69 deaths per 100,000 people.
