Enterprise Rent-A-Car is going farther into the carsharing business with the launch of Enterprise CarShare in the Salt Lake City market. Customers can get the cars – available to rent for as little as an hour – at nearly 30 locations in the downtown area and on local university campuses.
The expansion is part of an alliance with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Salt Lake City, the University of Utah and Utah Valley University that has a goal to bring affordable carsharing to Salt Lake City and Wasatch Front residents. The Utah Department of Transportation is providing backup to the program through its "TravelWise" program. TravelWise is designed around getting locals to find alternatives to driving alone to further reduce energy consumption, optimize mobility and improve air quality. Michael Allegra, UTA's general manager, said Enterprise CarShare offers the most competitively priced option to bring affordable carsharing solutions to the community, and has a strong track record in other urban markets. Enterprise has the infrastructure in place to meet demand at a fair price, he said.
Enterprise has been moving toward the carsharing business for a few years now, and started up Enterprise CarShare about two years ago. Acquiring the Zimride carsharing company this past summer and its 350,000 users fit well into its strategy. Enterprise CarShare now serves seven major retail markets and is active in more than 35 states, in Canada and the UK. Enterprise has got to get up to speed, since car rental competitors Avis and Hertz have their own major carsharing investments.
UTA and Enterprise CarShare are promoting the affordable car rental option as a support system to help people get around once they exit the train or a bus. The promotion ties into a larger national campaign that includes an Enterprise CarShare commercial; Enterprise says it's the first national TV ad for carsharing. "UTA took the lead in establishing this program in the Salt Lake area and Enterprise CarShare offered the most competitively priced option for bringing flexible, affordable car-sharing solutions to our community and has a strong track record of success in other urban markets," said UTA General Manager Michael Allegra. "Enterprise already is well established across Wasatch Front, so they have the ability to scale the local car-sharing model while meeting demand and maintaining fair prices."
By putting vehicles right where people live and work, and by making them available around the clock for hourly, daily and overnight rentals, Enterprise CarShare is a cost-effective, hassle-free supplement to public transit. Salt Lake City is the seventh major retail market to offer Enterprise CarShare in the past two years. Enterprise CarShare is now available in more than 35 U.S. states, Canada and the U.K., on more than 75 university campuses and on 40 government and business campuses.
This past summer, Enterprise acquired the business of Zimride, the largest ride-matching program in the United States with more than 350,000 users. Zimride is an online service that efficiently connects drivers, passengers and partners with colleges and universities to facilitate sustainable transportation-management solutions. Last month, Enterprise CarShare also was a key sponsor of the recent Shared-Use Mobility Summit, hosted by the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at the University of California, Berkley.
