Tesla plucks Apple exec for VP of Vehicle Programs position

Tesla Motors has often been compared to Apple. The company from Cupertino, CA with a penchant for clean design revolutionized cell phones (and, some would argue, computers), while Tesla is currently taking a sledge hammer to the automotive paradigm. It grabs our attention, then, when upper-level staff move from one firm to the other.

Such was the case when Apple-store designer George Blankenship switched to Tesla and became the VP of Sales and Ownership Experience, and it is again with the news that Doug Field has crossed over to take on the role of Vice President of Vehicle Programs. Field, who previously spent six years at Ford as a development engineer, said he hadn't considered leaving Apple before this opportunity came along. Said the new recruit,

"I started my career with the goal of creating incredible cars, but ultimately left the auto industry in search of fast-paced, exciting engineering challenges elsewhere. As the first high tech auto company in modern history, Tesla is at last an opportunity for me and many others to pursue the dream of building the best cars in the world -- while being part of one of the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley."

At his former employer, Field led development on such heralded products as the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac. We can only hope he has similar success with future Tesla product. Scroll down for the official press release.
