Locating a parking spot in a big city can come down to sheer luck. Instead of relying on parking karma, Audi plans to use data to shorten your search of the perfect spot. Audi announced yesterday the debut of INRIX Park on their Audi Connect telematics system. INRIX Park is a digital data stream that connects with participating parking spots. The system will offer users to compare parking spots by price, current availability and distance.
"With drivers looking for parking accounting for up to a third of all traffic in our cities, INRIX Park demonstrates how new data driven services can help drivers save time and frustration on the road," said Bryan Mistele, President and CEO of INRIX.
The Santa Monica Promenade parking deck provides an example of how the system can work. As seen in the image below, the Promenade structure tracks which spots are occupied and uses lights to indicate open spaces inside the garage. That data feed could be sent to INRIX, and in turn to Audi Connect, so that you'd know how busy the parking structure is before you even arrive.
INRIX Park will be available immediately through Audi Connect, offering continuously updated pricing and availability information for more than 18,000 participating parking locations in the U.S. Audi says that number will continue to grow.
