Amp will help develop wireless paratransit EVs in Pennsylvania

Amp Electric Vehicles recently said it'd get out of the business of converting SUVs to run on all-electric powertrains, and would instead focus on converting bigger delivery trucks. Now, Amp has reached an agreement to help develop paratransit vehicles for a Central Pennsylvania transit authority. The twist? They will be able to be recharged wirelessly.

Amp is collaborating with wireless electronics company Momentum Dynamics Corp. to make the paratransit medium-duty trucks for the Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) in the Reading, PA, area. A pilot program is supposed to start by March 2013.

Amp, which was founded in 2007, had specialized in converting SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz ML to run on battery-electric powertrains (after giving up on converting things like the Saturn Sky). But the company in October said it was moving away from that and would focus on converting trucks, which usually run on diesel fuel and typically get less than 10 miles per gallon. Amp's press release is available below.

AMP Electric Vehicles and Momentum Dynamics Announce Joint Venture to Deploy Wirelessly Charged Electric Paratransit Vehicles with BARTA

AMP and Momentum Dynamics will supply fully electric vehicles and wireless charging pads for the existing Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) pilot project to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

This pilot program with BARTA will show the pathway to wireless vehicle electrification and will assist operators of fleet vehicles to reduce their operating costs dramatically.
Cincinnati,OH (PRWEB) December 20, 2012

AMP Electric Vehicles (OTCBB and OTCQB: AMPD), a manufacturer of electric drive systems for medium-duty class 3-6 commercial truck platforms, and Momentum Dynamics Corporation (Momentum), a leader in wireless high-power electronics today jointly announced the formation of a joint venture to supply fully electric vehicles and wireless charging pads for the existing Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA) pilot project to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

The Board of Directors for BARTA voted on, and approved the purchasing agreement of two vehicles from AMP Electric Vehicles at a board meeting last night.
"We are pleased to work with Momentum on the electrification and wireless charging project for BARTA. Both our companies recognize the importance of collaborating to integrate wireless charging technology to be used in a real-world application for BARTAs' transit vehicles", said Marty Rucidlo, President of AMP. "We see wireless charging as an important technology asset for our package delivery fleet vehicle customers as well", Rucidlo added.

Said Andy Daga, CEO of Momentum Dynamics, "We have literally been around the world to find the most capable and dependable vehicle solution for BARTA, and AMP is really unmatched with the technology they have developed for this vehicle class. When proven successful, this pilot program with BARTA will show the pathway to wireless vehicle electrification and will assist operators of fleet vehicles to reduce their operating costs dramatically. They will be able to transition cost effectively to a zero-emission vehicle solution."

"Another advantage of converting existing fleet vehicles to electric drive, by using the AMP model, is that it allows private, municipal and state or federal vehicle managers to recycle older vehicles," said Daga.

BARTA is the first major transportation authority in Pennsylvania to deploy fully electric vehicles, and the first in the US to deploy electric paratransit vehicles.
The BARTA project is being funded by Momentum Dynamics, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania – Department of Environmental Protection, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Dennis D. Louwerse, Executive Director/CEO, Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority stated "BARTA is pleased to be cooperating with Momentum Dynamics and AMP to be part of the alternative energy solution for our Nation. This project is about environmental stewardship, which is an important part of BARTA's Strategic Plan."
