No, your eyes do not deceive you, that's a 2011 Toyota Tundra masquerading as a vintage pickup. Not an awesome old Toyota Hilux pickup, but something decidedly more domestic. Of course, a new Toyota doesn't look anything like a 1950's truck. Neither does a modern Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado or Ram, for that matter, which is why this whole enterprise is so bizarre.
If you're wondering where to place the blame, the truck is the product of the apparently fertile imagination of one Clint Bowyer, Toyota-sponsored NASCAR driver and seemingly all-around good guy. Bowyer will be auctioning off the custom truck at the Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction, to be held June 22-24 in Costa Mesa, CA, with the proceeds going to charity. That lucky organization is the Emporia Community Foundation, based in Emporia, KS, Bowyer's hometown.
While Bowyer said in a statement that he, "wanted to take a brand new Toyota Tundra and make it look like it had been sitting, working on a farm for 50 or 60 years," in reality the pseudo-patina is the creation of custom painter Jason Jewett.

Bowyer Designs Tundra for Barrett-Jackson Auction
BOWYER'S BARRETT-JACKSON DESIGN: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) driver Clint Bowyer created a specially designed 2011 Toyota Tundra as part of the Sherwin-Williams Planet Color® All-Star Charity Challenge that will be auctioned by Barrett-Jackson at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, Calif., on June 23. Bowyer, Toyota, Erick Brockmeyer Designs and custom painter Jason Jewett, owner of Red House Custom Paints, created the Tundra, which features a red patina paint job to give it the appearance of a well-used, weathered 'tri-five' style work truck. Additional '50s-style design elements incorporated into the design include a roof visor, custom wheels, louvered tailgate, vertical bar grill, white bumpers, mirrors and grill, a wood bed and wood bed stakes, and blanket upholstered seats.
CLINT'S CHARITY: Proceeds from Bowyer's Tundra at the Barrett-Jackson Auction will be donated to the Emporia Community Foundation, an organization designed to improve the quality of life in his hometown of Emporia, Kan. Bowyer is no stranger to giving back to his roots. Earlier this year, the 33-year-old contributed to the Bowyer Community Building in Emporia. Bowyer worked with Lyon County to secure the land and his 79 Fund donated more than $1 million for the building's design and construction of the multi-purpose community center that will host events, concerts and other activities for the 25,000 residents of Emporia.
CAMRY FOR CLINT: Camry driver Bowyer joined Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) in the No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Camry at the beginning of the 2012 season. He won the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) title and has made the 'Chase' championship playoff field three times (2007, 2008 and 2010) in six seasons competing in the NSCS. In 14 races this year, Bowyer has two top-five finishes, seven top-10 results and is currently ninth in the driver point standings.

Did you enjoy creating the Tundra that will participate in the Barrett-Jackson Auction?
"It was a really fun project. I want to thank Toyota for allowing that to happen, and Sherwin-Williams for putting the contest on and supplying everything. I hope it goes over with a big bang because I certainly really enjoyed it. It's a truck that is kind of me -- that's my style. I like that old ratty look. You know, your hot rods and the rat rods and things like that. It was a fun project to take a new Tundra and do in a week what mother nature would take 60 years to do."
What inspired your design?
"I wanted to take a brand new Toyota Tundra and make it look like it had been sitting, working on a farm for 50 or 60 years."
What charity will the auction proceeds benefit?
"The Emporia Community Foundation is where we just recently built and completed a building for everybody in the community to use. It's been a lot of fun and a great project. It's something that the community needed. The foundation -- the money for that goes towards so many different causes starting with children first and foremost. The fun thing about it is we can kind of control where the money goes. They do a lot of things at the hospital, a lot of storm shelters, school projects and things. It's been a lot of fun that we've had a lot of success with and I'm really proud of it."
Will you be able to attend the auction with NASCAR racing in Sonoma, Calif., the same weekend?
"We're going to go to the Barrett-Jackson Auction and actually sell and be a part of the auction. We're going to leave from Sonoma and go down there. I've been to the one in Scottsdale (Ariz.) -- it's so much fun. Hopefully we'll be able to enjoy it and have a lot of success. You go to the auctions and for a guy that loves cars, I'm a kid in a candy store, I really am. To be able to be a part of something that's selling, something that we built and were a part of -- it's going to be special."
