NExBTL renewable diesel to be tested at 24-Hours Nürburgring

On April 27th, Peugeot's radically styled EX1 electric ripped 'round the famed Nürburgring, setting a record for battery-powered vehicles with a time of 9 minutes 1.338 seconds. Come late June, a duo of vehicles – powered by Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel fuel – will take to the 'Ring, marking the first time that NExBTL will be tested under extreme competition conditions.

Two teams – Four Motors and Tuning Akademie – competing in the ADAC 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring circuit will fuel their vehicles with the 100-percent renewable diesel. The fuel will contain NExBTL and up to seven percent FAME biodiesel, both produced from rapeseed oil.

Kaisa Hietala, Neste Oil's vice-president of marketing, says that:
Numerous different field tests have confirmed the performance of NExBTL renewable diesel and the benefits it offers in terms of lower emissions, but this will be the first time that it will be tested under competition conditions.
Four Motors will pump its "BioConcept" vehicle full of renewable diesel fuel and Tuning Akademie will field its Audi A6, which features the automaker's latest emissions control technology. The on-track action starts June 23rd.

Neste Oil's renewable diesel to be tested under race conditions

01.06.2011

The performance of Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel is to be tested under race conditions for the first time this summer in Germany. Two teams competing in the ADAC 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring circuit between 23 and 26 June will run their cars on 100% renewable Diesel regenerativ. The fuel contains NExBTL renewable diesel and up to 7% conventional FAME biodiesel, both produced from rapeseed oil.

"Numerous different field tests have confirmed the performance of NExBTL renewable diesel and the benefits it offers in terms of lower emissions," says Kaisa Hietala, Neste Oil's Vice President, Marketing, "but this will be the first time that it will be tested under competition conditions. We are very excited that this will take place at the renowned 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring circuit, which has been the showcase for the latest automotive technology for decades."

Neste Oil's partner in the event is German-based Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP). The two teams that will compete running on Diesel regenerativ are Four Motors and Tuning Akademie. The Tuning Akademie car will feature the latest Audi A6 engine and emission control technology, while the Four Motors team will be competing with a 'bioconcept car' driven by Smudo, the frontman of the German Fantastic Four band.

The ADAC 24-Hour Race held at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany is an endurance event open to both sports and production cars. Close to 200 teams and 700 drivers are due to compete on the approx. 25-kilometer circuit in this year's event, which will be the first at which any competitors use premium-quality 100% biofuel.

The Diesel regenerativ fuel to be used has been field-tested in a fleet of 15 cars in Coburg, Germany since summer 2010.

NExBTL renewable diesel in brief

Based on Neste Oil's proprietary technology, premium-quality NExBTL renewable diesel is the most advanced diesel fuel on the market today. It easily outperforms both conventional biodiesel and fossil diesel, and can be produced from a flexible mix of vegetable oils and waste animal fat sourced from the food industry. Neste Oil's procurement chain ensures that all the raw materials it uses for NExBTL are produced responsibly. NExBTL renewable diesel has been shown to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% over the product's entire life cycle when compared to fossil diesel. Its lower tailpipe emissions also make a valuable contribution to enhancing overall air quality.

Unlike conventional biodiesels, hydrotreated vegetable oils, such as NExBTL renewable diesel, meet even the most stringent requirements set by automotive manufacturers. It offers excellent performance at low temperatures and can be used even in aviation. NExBTL diesel is suitable for all modern diesel engines without any modification as such or blended with fossil diesel. It is also fully compatible with existing distribution and logistical systems and requires no additional investments in this area.
