Six months before its official launch, Renault's electric Kangoo Z.E. has already logged a half-dozen orders. Placed by advertising company JCDecaux, the six-unit order for the battery-powered van is the first on record. JCDecaux will use the electrified Kangoos in major cities in the UK, including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Mark Cooper, group operations director at JCDecaux, had this to say regarding the advertising firm's purchase:
Some of our staff spend a large proportion of their working day in vans, so it's vital that we provide the most pleasant working environment for them, especially in heavily congested urban areas. Those fortunate to have sampled the Kangoo Van Z.E. have rated its performance and lack of noise very highly.
The Renault Kangoo Z.E. range launches this October and will be priced from £16,990 to £18,690 ($27,639 to $30,405 U.S. at the current exchange rate) excluding VAT, plus £59 ($96 U.S.) per month to lease the battery. The electrified Kangoo features the same dimensions, equipment, payload capacity and styling of the internal combustion-engined versions, but is powered by a 44 kW electric motor that gets its juice from a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery. Range is listed at a healthy 106 miles.

Renault electric van secures first orders

With another six months to go before the launch of Renault's first electric commercial vehicle, the firm celebrating securing the first order for its new Kangoo Z.E (zero emission) van.

The order for six models has been placed by one of the French car maker's longstanding customers, JCDecaux, which is known as Europe's largest 'out-of-home' advertising company.

The new electric van will not hit the showrooms until October, when it will retail for £16,990 excluding VAT, making it an affordable proposition for businesses across the country. As one of the first of four electric vehicles Renault has planned for imminent launch, the firm is confident that this will be the first of many orders for the new electric version of its popular Kangoo LCV.

The initial order of six vans will be used to enable JCDecaux's staff to travel between sites, with the company's portfolio including billboards, street furniture, retail and airports, reaching more than 293 million consumers in 3,400 cities worldwide. In the UK, JCDecaux's presence covers all major cities, including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, making the Kangoo Van Z.E. the perfect choice for its fleet requirements as the infrastructure for charging the vehicles already exists.

Allaying concerns of electric vehicle compromises, the Kangoo Van Z.E. features the same dimensions, equipment and look of the internal combustion-engined versions, together with identical load capacity (ranging from 3 to 4.6m³ depending on model), payload (650kg), load length and high levels of comfort. It also has a range of around 100 miles per charge and a top speed of 81 mph.

Mark Cooper, Group Operations Director from JCDecaux, said: "Here at JCDecaux, we have always been industry innovators and have done everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint, and believe that in the major cities where we operate, the transfer of our fleet from fossil fuels to electric is a major step forward in aiding this process even further.

Adding: "Those fortunate to have sampled the Kangoo Van Z.E. have rated its performance and lack of noise very highly. They were also struck by how easy-to-drive and comfortable it is."

The Renault Kangoo Van Z.E. range launches in October 2011, priced £16,990 to £18,690 excluding VAT, plus £59 per month battery lease based on 9,000 miles/4 years. More information on Renault's Z.E. range, including pre-reservation details, is available at www.renault-ze.com.
