Why use recycled motor oil? Well, according to John Wesley, chief executive officer of UL, "Using re-refined (or recycled) oil cuts fossil fuel use, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and reduces harmful environmental impacts on our Nation's waterways. Recently, production of Eco Ultra motor oil hit a milestone of 1.5 million gallons. Now, UL aims to expand the use of Eco Ultra by branching out into the retail market. Soon, Valvoline's NextGen recycled engine oil may compete with Eco Ultra for sales.
The U.S. produces approximately 1.3 billion gallons of used oil per year and only around 10 percent of that is re-refined. The rest is either improperly disposed of, burned as an industrial fuel or – get ready for this – converted to a gasoline-like fuel. Researchers at the University of Cambridge (UC) claim to have developed a process that uses microwaves to turn old motor oil into a gasoline-like fuel that can be used in conventional vehicles. They say the process has "excellent potential" for commercial use. Howard Chase, professor of biochemical engineering at UC, had this to say of the process:
For reasons that seem obvious, UC is not willing to discuss the exact details behind its potential breakthrough process for converting old oil into usable fuel.
Our results indicate that a microwave-heated process shows exceptional promise as a means for recycling problematic waste oil for use as fuel. The recovery of valuable oils using this process shows advantage over traditional processes for oil recycling and suggests excellent potential for scaling the process to the commercial level.

America's Only True Closed Loop Oil Recycling Company Leads the Green Motor Oil Movement
WICHITA, Kan., March 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Across the country more and more Americans are making the switch to Universal Lubricants' high quality green motor oil -- ECO ULTRA®. Made in the U.S. at the company's advanced re-refinery, ECO ULTRA® is an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified motor oil that has one of the highest percentages of recycled oil content and meets Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) requirements and current vehicle manufacturers' specifications. Unlike other companies that simply bottle re-refined oil, Universal Lubricants collects, re-refines, blends and re-distributes its own green motor oil ensuring that every quart, every gallon consistently is of the highest quality for optimal performance.
"Using re-refined (or recycled) oil cuts fossil fuel use, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and reduces harmful environmental impacts on our Nation's waterways. ECO ULTRA® provides American drivers the performance and reliability they expect in a high quality motor oil while at the same time having one of the highest percentages of recycled oil content," said John Wesley, chief executive officer of Universal Lubricants. "Hitting the 1.5 million gallon production mark already is a great milestone, but we think it's just the tip of the iceberg. ECO ULTRA® has received great marketplace acceptance among professional installers and we think consumers are ready for it, so we are now moving the product into retail channels."
The U.S. produces approximately 1.3 billion gallons of used oil each year, and only 10% of it is re-refined. The rest of the used oil is either improperly disposed of (damaging the environment) or burned as an industrial fuel and is gone forever. Universal Lubricants is dedicated to reversing this trend.
Universal Lubricants collects used oil from the government and private business such as auto parts stores, dealerships, service stations, and oil change centers across the U.S. The company then transports that oil to one of the world's most technologically advanced re-refineries located in Wichita, Kansas, where it undergoes a state-of-the-art hydro-treating process to remove all of the water, fuel and solvents as well as metals, asphalt flux and other heavy contaminants. The purified high quality Grade II base stock oil is then blended with a synthetic formula and additives to make API certified ECO ULTRA® products. That oil is then collected again by the company and put back through its closed loop process.
ECO ULTRA® products are available in bulk, drums, pails, and quarts. For more information about Universal Lubricant's ECO ULTRA® products, visit www.ecoultraoil.com.
