Another day, another supermini for the UK. The latest entrant in the crowded European urban car class comes from Malaysian automaker Perodua, in the form of the Myvi. The little five-seater (a cloned Daihatsu Sirion) comes in two trim levels -- Sxi (5-speed manual) and Ezi (4-speed automatic) -- and has Daihatsu's 86-horsepower 1.3L K3-VE 4-cylinder underhood. That's good for an 11-second 0-62 time. Slow? Yes, but not a big deal, as most cars in this class see duty in urban environments that don't call for high performance. In the city, this is perfectly adequate, and with a top speed of 106 mph, it can still get out of its own way on the highway.
The entry price of £7,799 (Sxi) or £8,499 includes A/C, remote locks, A/C, ABS with EBD, electric mirrors, 4-speaker CD audio with RDS radio, power windows, a security system, and the stuff you expect to find, such as power steering and airbags up front. That sounds like a lot of car for not too much money, a deal thet gets even better when you factor in the £1,000 cash back that's being offered on both trim levels right now.
Throw in 58.8 mpg (Imperial gallons) in the extra-urban (highway) cycle, and you've got a winner in our book.
Plenty of people in the US would consider cars like this if they were readily available. All they have to do is manufacture/import enough of them.

The 1.3 power unit features the very latest technology which results in a power output of 64 Kw at 6000 rpm and a torque figure of 116 Nm at 3200 rpm. The power unit is also extremely efficient, with an outstanding fuel consumption of 58.8mpg for the manual version over the Extra Urban cycle.
At the wheel
Driving the Myvi is effortless due to its light and smooth controls, combined with a clear and concise display. The steering column is fully adjustable for tilt and, in conjunction with the adjustable driver's seat and the above average headroom, provides a comfortable and safe environment for even the longest of journeys. Information is provided through a three dial dash board featuring speedometer in Mph & Kph, tachometer and centrally mounted temperature gauge. Other information, including fuel level, is provided by a digital information unit located between the two major dials. The dashboard appears to be a plain black panel but comes to life with orange illumination on starting the engine. To the left of this panel is a centrally mounted console with an integral RDS radio/CD player featuring a soft lit orange display. Also in this unit are the three rotary controls for the heating and ventilation system, with the push buttons for hazard lights, heated rear screen and the all-important air conditioning located conveniently above these.
