Perodua MYVI supermini lands in UK

Another day, another supermini for the UK. The latest entrant in the crowded European urban car class comes from Malaysian automaker Perodua, in the form of the Myvi. The little five-seater (a cloned Daihatsu Sirion) comes in two trim levels -- Sxi (5-speed manual) and Ezi (4-speed automatic) -- and has Daihatsu's 86-horsepower 1.3L K3-VE 4-cylinder underhood. That's good for an 11-second 0-62 time. Slow? Yes, but not a big deal, as most cars in this class see duty in urban environments that don't call for high performance. In the city, this is perfectly adequate, and with a top speed of 106 mph, it can still get out of its own way on the highway.

The entry price of £7,799 (Sxi) or £8,499 includes A/C, remote locks, A/C, ABS with EBD, electric mirrors, 4-speaker CD audio with RDS radio, power windows, a security system, and the stuff you expect to find, such as power steering and airbags up front. That sounds like a lot of car for not too much money, a deal thet gets even better when you factor in the £1,000 cash back that's being offered on both trim levels right now.

Throw in 58.8 mpg (Imperial gallons) in the extra-urban (highway) cycle, and you've got a winner in our book.

Plenty of people in the US would consider cars like this if they were readily available. All they have to do is manufacture/import enough of them.

Don't believe me? Try finding a Honda Fit.

PRESS RELEASES:
MYVI - THE ALL NEW 5-DOOR SUPERMINI FROM PERODUA

This September, Perodua are very proud to announce their latest release to the UK market. The Myvi is a brand new 5-door supermini oozing with style and sophistication, and the launch of the new model this month marks an exciting progression for Perodua, a forward-thinking car manufacturer with a great reputation for producing high quality modern cars at a price that won't break the bank.

In fact, Myvi will hit the market at a very competitive £7,799 OTR* for the Sxi (manual) and an attractive £8499 OTR* for the Ezi (auto). As an additional incentive, Perodua will be offering a fabulous £1000 cashback offer on both models during the launch period, which means the price you will pay at dealerships is £6,799 OTR** for the Sxi and £7,499 OTR** for the Ezi.

A lively 1.3 litre, 4 cylinder DOHC DVVT engine, along with responsive steering and smooth controls, makes the Myvi not only fun to drive in urban environments but means it can certainly hold its own on the motorway. With the latest electronic ABS/EBD braking system fitted as standard, the Myvi is fully equipped to help you stop quickly and safely with confidence.

Despite Myvi's modest price tag, no expense has been spared in kitting out this modern 5-door supermini to the highest specification, both inside and out. Myvi is well stocked with the usual features you would expect to find on a latest generation model, such as power assisted steering, driver and passenger airbags, and an advanced engine immobiliser. However, finding numerous additional benefits also on the standard Myvi specification sheet, such as air conditioning, tilt adjustable steering, remote central locking, front and rear electric windows and integrated 4-speaker RDS Radio/CD, should come as a rather pleasant surprise to the discerning Perodua customer.

Also rather surprising for such a reasonably-priced car is the Myvi's sleek and sporty exterior styling, which is certainly always worth a second look. Low budget doesn't have to mean boxy and the new Myvi swirls and curves in all the right places; with aerodynamic body-contoured headlamps accentuating the smooth nose, a sweeping side profile tracing to the rear and elegantly rounded body-coloured bumpers completing the look in dynamic style. Myvi's alluring body shape is further enhanced by its gleaming paintwork, thanks to superior paint technology which ensures a glossy, glass-like shine in a range of seven glamourous colours (including metallic paint at no extra cost).

Whilst Myvi's stylish looks will undoubtedly capture the attention, you definitely won't want to ignore all the practical, versatile features this funky small car has to offer. Myvi seats 5 passengers quite comfortably with plenty of legroom, and provides convenient cup and bottle holders in all the right places for quick refreshment on long journeys. However, if you've got more luggage than passengers and can't fit all your suitcases in the spacious boot, the Myvi's unique 60:40 split/fold-flat design for the back seats allows you to more than double the rear load space in just a couple of simple moves.

Safety is of the highest priority in the design of all Perodua models and the Myvi is no exception to this rule. Having achieved the top safety level in its class during stringent crash tests, the Myvi's front crumple zones and newly developed body structure absorb more effectively the impact of any collision from all angles. Driver and passenger airbags, seat belt pretensioners and head impact protection devices combine to ensure occupant safety in the event of even just a minor shunt; a comforting thought if the kids are in the back on the way to school.

In fact, whatever your driving habits or requirements, Myvi is well-equipped to suit your motoring needs. Packed with the latest safety innovations, performance technology, great looks and effortless handling, the Perodua Myvi is a well-equipped, versatile supermini, ideally suited to cope with driving on our roads today.

The Perodua Myvi represents an exciting development for Perodua UK and marks the beginning of a new era for the brand as it moves into a whole new sector of the UK market. With the Myvi Sxi (manual) available for just £6,799 (including £1000 cashback) and the Myvi Ezi (auto) for only £7,499 (including £1000 cashback), this B-sector supermini is in a class of its own with its high standard specification, stylish looks and versatile features. Perodua plans to increase its 70-strong dealer network to support the new model range in the coming months, and the brand continues to move from strength to strength in its second decade.

Model line-up

Perodua's Myvi line-up includes two models based upon a single, compact 5-door body shell. The Myvi Sxi manual provides a high level of sophistication, equipment, comfort and safety. This is shared by the Ezi model which also has the additional specification of a four speed, fully automatic transmission with switchable overdrive and a digital gear selection indicator in the instrument binnacle. Externally both models have colour-matched bumpers, mirrors and external door handles plus a choice of exciting new paint finishes.

Safety

Occupant safety is a major consideration in the design of all Perodua vehicles and the Myvi is no exception, featuring a newly developed body structure that absorbs impact more effectively from the front, rear and sides to protect occupants. The body shell also features the latest head impact protection technology within its structure. Additional safety is provided by standard fitment of driver and passenger airbags, side impact protection beams built in to the vehicle structure and seatbelt pretensioners to reduce whiplash injury. The Myvi also benefits from the latest electronic ABS/EBD system, ensuring even emergency braking is fully controlled.

Practicality

With an overall length and width of 3720mm and 1665mm respectively, the Myvi is extremely manoeuvrable for city driving, yet spacious enough to feel swift and secure on motorways. With a turning circle of just 4.7 metres, the Myvi nips into tight parking spaces with ease. The Myvi's high roofline of 1550mm provides outstanding visibility and headroom, whilst the tardis-like interior gives a feeling of space, allowing five people and their luggage to travel in comfort. The incredibly spacious interior provides load volumes which range from 225 litres VDA with the rear seats in place to 630 litres VDA with the bench folded.

Latest generation 1.3 DOHC DVVT power unit

A latest generation 1298cc double overhead camshaft engine, with four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, powers Myvi through a five-speed manual gearbox on the Sxi or a four-speed automatic on the Ezi. Like previous Perodua power units the latest Japanese derived K3-VE, 4 cylinder unit provides lively performance with the manual version reaching 62 Mph in only 11.3 seconds, along with a top speed of 106 Mph, making the Myvi fun to drive. The 1.3 power unit features the very latest technology which results in a power output of 64 Kw at 6000 rpm and a torque figure of 116 Nm at 3200 rpm. Myvi's engine is also kind to the environment with emissions of only 137 g/km on the Sxi and 151 g/km on the Ezi automatic. The power unit is also extremely efficient, with an outstanding fuel consumption of 58.8mpg for the manual version over the Extra Urban cycle.

At the wheel

Driving the Myvi is effortless due to its light and smooth controls, combined with a clear and concise display. The steering column is fully adjustable for tilt and, in conjunction with the adjustable driver's seat and the above average headroom, provides a comfortable and safe environment for even the longest of journeys. Information is provided through a three dial dash board featuring speedometer in Mph & Kph, tachometer and centrally mounted temperature gauge. Other information, including fuel level, is provided by a digital information unit located between the two major dials. The dashboard appears to be a plain black panel but comes to life with orange illumination on starting the engine. To the left of this panel is a centrally mounted console with an integral RDS radio/CD player featuring a soft lit orange display. Also in this unit are the three rotary controls for the heating and ventilation system, with the push buttons for hazard lights, heated rear screen and the all-important air conditioning located conveniently above these. The panel is finished in brushed silver which contrasts attractively with the charcoal grey fascia. The lights and wash/wipe functions are controlled with column stalks positioned either side of the sports-style steering wheel. A drop down glove box, door pockets and front cup holders provide useful stowage space.

The rear seats can either accommodate three adults in comfort or, through the 60:40 split/fold-flat system, combine bulky luggage and passengers with ease. The unique 60:40 split/fold-flat system operates by the base moving forward and down, thus allowing the rear seat backrest to lie flat on top to create a completely flat floor. Rear seat passengers have the option of two reclining positions for their seat backrest along with individual electric window controls, convenient magazine pockets in the rear of the front seats and two bottle/cup holders. All five seats are upholstered in an attractive high quality fabric, which is once again echoed on the door panels, and benefit from a secure 3-point seatbelt for each occupant.
Chassis and handling

Ride and handling are controlled by MacPherson front struts and a rear torsion beam with coil spring. This system provides sure-footed handling with a smooth and comfortable ride. The suspension is also designed to provide minimum intrusion and maximum interior load space. The power-assisted rack and pinion steering boasts a tight steering lock and a minimum turning circle of just 4.7 metres. Braking performance is provided by a servo-assisted, ventilated front disc/rear drum system backed up by the reassurance of an electronic ABS/EBD system, ensuring that even emergency braking procedures are carried out in a controlled and safe manner.
Low running costs

Perodua has established excellent credentials where running costs are concerned and believes Myvi will be no exception, with low servicing costs and excellent fuel consumption of 58.8 Mpg on the Sxi manual version. Myvi will carry a full warranty package which includes comprehensive cover for three years/36,000 miles, two year's free roadside recovery membership and a six year anti-perforation guarantee. A competitive purchase price coupled to 10,000 miles service intervals, a low level of VED and outstanding fuel economy make it a serious contender for long term value.

Conclusion

Myvi is the perfect supermini for today's evolving motoring needs. It is extremely economical, highly specified, versatile, easy to drive and packed with the latest technology and safety innovations.
