Some people would read that and assume they know what marque I'm talking about. Then I'd add the clincher -- "It's an SUV!" -- and watch them quietly freak out. Relax. We're talking about Fornasari, of course. (I kid on the "of course" part.) Yes, Fornasari. It's an Italian boutique automaker, and they have a new luxury/performance SUV called the RR600.
The two-door SUV has a 6-liter GM V8 underhood, tuned to make either 500 or 600 horsepower (buyer's choice). Power goes to all four wheels via a six-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, and the RR600 makes the run to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4 seconds. Spiffy numbers to say the least. Good thing, because spiffy isn't the first word that leaps to mind when it comes to the Fornasari's appearance. It's definitely interesting, though.
Imagine a Rally Raid car dressed up for street use, and you've pretty much got a handle on the RR600's styling. The nose features either two or four headlamps (customer's choice) and is dominated by three gaping intakes that make the openings on the Porsche Cayenne Turbo look small by comparison. Stylistically, that nose is a bit of a mash-up. Too bad, because in profile, the Fornasari looks quite athletic. The vent behind the front fender and the roof spoiler add some nice detail. In back, four round taillights emulate Ferrari and four exhaust tips hint at the machine's high-performance potential.
The cabin is awash in leather, but is pretty kit-car-looking otherwise. (The website also has a shot of one done with gold snakeskin on the shift boot and door panel. Very, very unfortunate...)
Fornasari has a second 2-door SUV called the RR450 and a Callaway Corvette LM-based sports car they simply call the LeMans. You can read all about them at fornasaricars.com.
